18th club, whose next?

That would be if the SkyNZ increase is determinant on club 18 being in NZ. They just increased it significantly without that being a consideration. It would also be on if the Australian Tv companies, who pay by far the most of the deal, want another low drawing NZ team or would prefer an Australian team that at least has a chance of increasing audiences for them.

Then it will come down to two things. Financial sustainability and Jnr development. I would suggest Perth is likely to be strong in the former and NZ2 in the latter. Which is the biggest priority for the ARLC is anyone's guess.

Pretty much agree with everything.

The idea that each team has to have a reserve grade team is the embodiment of a solution looking for a problem. It is also, as you said, so incapable of seeing the effect that it will cause to the game outside of Sydney, it is to the point of wilful ignorance.

We should be looking at a national second tier competition and base it broadly around the NSW and QLD Cups. You can include a team each from WA, SA and Vic as well as from country NSW regions like the Riverina, or Northern NSW etc and even PNG, Fiji and some NZ teams. You can split it into conferences and then they can play in an overall final series. I would also remove any monikers/brands/regions from the NRL so no Dolphins in the QLD Cup and no Rabbitohs, Raiders etc in the NSW Cup.
So where do NRL squad players 19-33 play? How iwll other clubs in this second tier compete with clubs that are aligned and full of NRL contracted players? How will non aligned clubs keep their best players when they want to go play for a NRl aligned club as its best chance of an NRL contract? That's the big problem of running a second tier that also doubles up as a reserve grade.

A minor league set up if you will probably would only work if we had a national competition.

Broadly speaking, it could essentially work as the QLD Cup does now, so players 19-33 would be split amongst the affiliate teams. The NSW Cup would essentially just have the Bears, Magpies, Newtown and Illawarra plus other regions in NSW like Riverina, Central West, Northern NSW etc. You could also put teams in WA, SA and Vic into the NSW Cup. Maybe even the Silktails and a couple of NZ teams.

These conferences would essentially just run like their own competitions until a top 4 is selected for the finals between the two conferences and a Super Bowl style final.

The warriors aren’t a low drawing team in Australia.

Aussie tv are getting a 9th game regardless.

sky nz aren’t paying more if they expand to Perth lol

on financial sustainability the arlc has to move to giving expansion teams a higher grant is say 1 million pa to help level the playing field

Did you read my post - see the following extract- I have PNG as number 2- Politics will come into this decision and I don't mean NRL politics either

My ranking of the candidates would be

1. Perth
2. PNG
3. NZ2
4. 5TH QLD Team
5. North Sydney Bears

North Sydney is probably the most lucrative market there

They clearly are. Last place in combined viewing and in foxtel viewing.

skynz only increased due to competition from streaming, theres nothing to say they’ll increase again for another nz club.

I agree, no business in its right mind has start up areas that don’t have extra investment to get them functioning well. All well and good if there’s a pokie den to cover that, but if not then who? Maybe rich owners or maybe we have another titans.

It needs reorganisation of the governing bodies in the area and existing NRL resources directed to cover it.
Before you worry about taking their area how about manly cover more of the northern beaches first ?

As an area, yes there is plenty of money but when you have nine other sides in the vicinity, it is no longer lucrative. Simple supply and demand

More ppl in north Sydney would get behind nrl team than ppl would in perth

We cover the whole area?

let’s see with the new stadium if manly can ave
Best thing for manly would to have their main rival back. Look what parra & Penrith do each time they play.
central coast bears brings back not only the manly rivalry it was also be massive vs Newcastle

central coast will end up with a team it’s a matter of when. The population just keeps growing.

it’s easy for fans to travel on the train from Sydney or Newcastle and has a picturesque and amazing ground
