The Cargo Cult is still alive and well it seems. Funny how easily topics get misconstrued. The cola wars in the PNGRFL go back to the days when the legendary Bruce Flynn (a Doggies or Berries as he called them backrower in the early '50's before moving for life to PNG) was GM of the SP Brewery which was the major league sponsor along with WD&HO Wills forever. Those who know PNG will remember the Easter KOOL Cup knockout. SP also owned the Pepsi franchise and as such CCA products were driven to other codes, primarily soccer and the arts. Then in the SL stoush CCA sponsored the ARL-aligned CocaCola Vipers as a swipe at the Murdoch PNGRFL and the pendulum swung when SP brought the rights to CocaCola. The current President of the PNGRFL Stan Joyce was until recently also an SP Brewery GM.
My point is that sports sponsorship, no matter what the media hacks or corporate marketing teams might tell you, is about getting the best bang for their buck no matter what their personal allegiances might be. Case in point, famed Kumul lock and later outspoken national coach John Wagambie was a director of global resource giant Chevron which hardly put a cent into the game. So just because there are monied corporations in PNG doesn't mean they will stump-up cash willy-nilly. Well at least not like politicians harvesting votes nor like Albo's the Great Wall of PNG.
Somebody asked am I afraid that they might be successful in their bid. As I have stated, I would love them to get in and be based in Moresby. I also agree that if they don't get in this round they probably never will. But
I do fear that they will suck-up money like a bottomless pit. And as for doom and gloom, being forewarned is being forearmed, it shouldn't take a tragedy to put everyone on notice. PNG is a great place but she ain't all beer and skittles.
