What 5 please?
whove played first grade in last decade or so
bryson goodwin(south Perth/canning)
Cory Patterson (south perth)
Waqa blake (pirates sg ball)
curtis rhona (pirates sg ball)
royce hunt (goldfields titans)
Kurt De Luis (south perth)
Jackson Topine (ellenbrook)
Jordan pereira (willagee)
Adam Quinlan (pirates sg ball)

theres 5 or 6 of our ladies in nrlw with Cherrington and price being the best of the bunch

there’s quite a few others in nsw cup and qrl cup as well on the fringe

we’ve got 26 RL clubs and over 4000 registered players in WA, it’s nonsense to think with better funding and elite pathways we can’t develop players here.

we’ve also got a RL high school scholarship program in a number of decent schools here that we can entice kids over with, especially from pi and nz.

There are big kiwi and Pom communities here so coming to live in a beautiful place like perth with amazing weather that has established connections back to your communities is an easy sell for kiwis and poms looking for an nrl shot.

signing established players will be tougher for sure but I’m not too worried that a financially well off pirates club can’t get plenty of younger players over to perth to develop.

Poms and kiwis looking for a shot are already being looked at. If they're not playing in the NRL that means they've been looked at and deemed not good enough.

That’s nonsense as is proved every year. even at first grade we see the likes of Hynes and now Meaney at Storm get a shot due to injury who were not regular first graders but should be.
There’s no finite amount of jnrs that could make it in nrl with the right opportunities, more nrl clubs means more opportunities.
you could easily build two to three competitive nrl rosters from the SL alone.
we’ve barely tapped nz, pi, png where union is still sucking up most of the jnr rugby (sic) talent.
we’ve not seriously invested in wa, Vic and nt as player sources.

we’ve barely begun outside nsw and qlnd. Largely due to not having the revenue or the vision to do so,

So I'm after a shot. Should I head to Perth?

The pathways to the NRL are pretty well struck and those that are good enough are guided into those pathways.

Stop acting like there are NRL standards players ready to be plucked like apples off a tree in every town in WA (or England or New Zealand).

According to their Instagram account the nrlwa first grade comp will have 5 senior teams this year not 6. That’s not a good sign of positive things happening in Perth. They appear to be going backwards.
There were 6 first grade and 11 reserve grade sides last year. This year there is 5 first grade, 8 reserve grade and 8 third grade, so there is actually an increase in senior teams.

If there’s a well run nrl team in perth, absolutely! Why wouldnt you?

what a strange and self defeating idea that pathways can’t be increased and improved.

Nice exaggeration, there’s jnr rl players in many areas that with the right environment will become first grade players. It needs opportunity, funding and stratgegy.

we have little of any of those things at moment beyond traditional pathways that haven’t changed much in decades. Let’s take penrith as another great example. They’ve been sat on the biggest jnr participation region for decades, but only in recent years have they had the funding and strategy to actually develop systems and pathways to d9 something with it. Now look at them And the number and quality of players being brought through,

After years of solid growth I am concerned about Rl here in years ahead. A resurgent union heavily funded by twiggy and his mate is sucking up the best young kids and supporting the snrs men’s comp to grow.

In total opposite the arlc has cut nrlwa funding, we’ve lost our only elite pathway program become of it and people are frustrated by the nrls attitude to WA, seeing us a cash machine and not willing to put anything back into the game here. For the first time in 15 years I think we may see the game contract Unless something is done.

Why the nrl has slashed $25million from grassroots funding whilst at same time announcing big surpluses needs to be asked!

Thanks. Ive been looking for that information all over the place. Where did you find it? Their play rugby league site doesn’t tell you anything.

Totally agree, I know of 12 players under 18 years old who have moved into NRL pathways.
There are also quite a few trying out for the Force under 16s, who could be playing league but are opting not to this year but will be back next year to try out for state 17s.
An NRL team would definitely make a difference.

yeah its that chicken and egg scenario again...

I believe having an NRL team will lead to greater junior numbers and better pathways.

Not really. Nothing stopping them being team 20 instead of team 18 when they have better pathways in place

How has that mentality affected the Storm? It is entirely possible for there to be junior setups in WA like Victoria has now as well as a link to another established club in QLD Cup or thinking outside the box PNG or Fiji.

Plenty from NZ move to Australian clubs at a similar age and in various sports players move in their teens half way across the world so it’s not quite the world shaking idea you seem to make out.

How many more players in SEQ do you think picked up RL this year because of the Dolphins? Were juniors in Redcliffe going to waste before now? The top down mentality of needing an NRL team in every area to bring players through is 80’s thinking. There is absolutely no reason pathways in PNG & the Pacific couldn’t be bringing through 100s of players without needing an NRL club at the top to facilitate it.

Junior pathways is one factor to consider for professional sport expansion teams but there are plenty just as important or more important.

Melbourne Storm run their own u19's and 21's team. They get a coach to the games or the NSW teams coach down there.

Their 2nd tier guys train with NRL team and fly up to Brisbane on game day, Home again straight from the game.

It allows them to wake up and sleep in their own beds. More importantly can attend school as normal with friends.

That model would be the plan with a Pasifika team based in QLD or NSW.

Lets assume that Perth does manage to attract some quality kids. How would such a set up work there?

They’d obviously have to live, work and play in perth. Or at the feeder club we have in qrl if they are from queensland.

No one said anything about pathways not being improved.

Penrith have always produced players, the difference is that they now play for that club.

If you think that poms and kiwis 'looking for a shot' equates to NRL standard footballers you're dreaming.

Perth will end up having decent juniors if they got an nrl team

it used to be classed as the third rugby league state

Maybe you don’t watch SL or didnt watch st Helen’s in the pre season? You could build 2-3 competitive nrl teams from SL.
we saw what happened to raiders when they brought just 4 in.

If we want to go to 20 clubs then nrl is going to need to invest in more and new pathways and SL will become a prime recruitment ground.

Depends where you are getting them from. Look I agree that his thoughts about Perth are a little too optimistic (they aren’t going to save Rugby League) but sometimes in amongst it all he is right.

The competition has scratched the surface in terms of developing and attracting talent. We only develop players from two states really. We don’t really attract or develop a lot of players based in New Zealand or the Islands (a lot of them are actually those move to NSW or QLD at a young age) and we don’t attract many from other competitions/sports.

Lachlan Miller and Rugby sevens is a basic example. I think for example most wages in World Rugby Sevens are $80 -150k. There’s a talent pool right there that you can plunder.

I think you're being a little optimistic about the quantity and quality of players hanging around to join the nrl.
