Cameron Smith said the thing you dope. I think he knows more than you.

Melbourne great Cameron Smith believes there's enough "thirst" for Perth to have an NRL franchise of their own, but says it would only thrive if the team enjoys success from the outset.
Lol, he doesnt even directly say that in the article. Thats not his quote its the journos.
What he says is:

"So it would be important that if a team was to start up over here, they'd need to have a bit of success early."

Which is obvious, for any new club. Good luck being popular if you get thrashed every week.

It actually took 3 years before the Storm were achieving the NRl crowd avg.

yep thats why we need Force or Glory to do better, a new perth NRl cub to be up challenging the capacity for some games then we might see HBF park get finished. Its hard to justify spending $200mill of tax payers money on a stadium when the current two tenants cant half fill it.
Or Vlandys to guarantee a Perth team if the Govt finishes it!

The odds of matching their success are against it, but Perth isnt Melbourne and wont need their level of success to pull a crowd.

Maybe, maybe not. Great lifestyle, away from the East coast RL media goldfish bowl, great place to bring up a family, amazing outdoors and weather. Its not a real hard sell if the club has a great coach, good facilities and a good culture. We managed it in 1994 when Perth was a far less attractive city to live.

Training centre, again should be a demand from Vlandys as condition of a license. State govt here has funded hundreds of millions of $'s worth of training centres for other sports. That should be an easy demand for NRL to make.

There is no reason a well run club with some decent start up backing cant succeed in Perth. NRL is on a high, interest in Perth is at a high (40k locals last year at NRL event) Govt wants a team and NRL should be demanding what that support looks like and a consortium of successful businessmen ready to run it. We wont be Broncos, but we wont be Titans either.
Titans were playing out of a quality stadium from 2008. It hasn't helped them on and off the field.

Perth will be playing at an outdated ground with limited capacity.

There's a good chance Perth will be worse than the Titans.

How many players will choose Perth over Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne to raise a family?

Has the WA Gov agreed to build a training centre?

How much capital has the consortium agreed to inject into the team?

Lots of great juniors who end up doing nothing in first grade... how the club uses and develops them plays a big part. Didn't the Broncos pass on Smith anyway? Slater took a few years to become incumbent fullback for QLD, he was pretty raw and error prone his first few seasons. Inglis was a freak the moment he entered first grade, came to North Brisbane as a teen, went to Wavell Heights and played for the Norths Devils, whom the Storm were affiliated with- they got lucky.

You do realise that Storm got money from News Ltd to develop those juniors into great players, right?

Success in the NRL is dependent on finishing in the top four.

The only expansion club that's managed to finish in top four from its inception is the Storm. They finished 3rd in 1998 and 1999. Dropped to 6th in 2000 and saw their crowds drop over the next couple of seasons as they missed the finals. Then the systemic rorting began to ensure they were successful.

Can't Perth negotiate with Adelaide
Joint venture club
Twice many fan's. Crowd's
2 stadium's. 100s more sponsors
Shared load. Twice more government money
Far stronger franchise

so you think stadium quality is the sole driver of a clubs fanbase and appeal?
Maybe the Gold coast just doesnt like NRL as much as Perth does? or maybe due to its population everyone supports a different NRl club than the Titans? or maybe the years the Titans were run like a basketcase and went bust has impacted fans interest? or maybe in fact the titans are not the worse attended club in the NRl anyway?
And maybe perth wont have those hurdles in its way?

Hopefully enough. I know I did. I could, and still could, have lived anywhere in Australia and chose Perth as its a beautiful place to live with an amazing lifestyle and a housing cost thats still (just) affordable (or will be if you east coaster stop driving our property prices up!)

Who knows? we arent privvy to what conversations the WA govt and NRl are having. If the NRl intends a team in perth they should be driving a very hard bargain given the WA Govt's keenness to get a team here.
RLHQ, HBF stadium improvements and funding for Jnrs/women SHOULD be what the NRL is asking for. take a leaf out of AFL's book in Tasmania ffs!

$426 gazillion. Stop asking stupid questions.

Thats plainly stupid statement to make! Success for an expansion team in first ten years of existence is very very different to that and is measured in numerous ways, on the field being just one.
Years 1-3 be competitive. Yes 4-7 be challenging for 8th spot, Years 7+ break into the 8 on a semi regular basis and maybe hit a top 4 at some point. That'd be what I'd consider success for any new club in its first decade.
Storm were an anomaly and will never be repeated.
Fortunately for the game Perth isnt melbourne and wont need Storms level of on field success to be successful in and of themselves.

That’s what everybody said when Cronk, Slater and then Smith left the Storm. They just keep producing champions and turning ordinary players into world beaters.
I thought they might fall in a heap when they lost Kimmorley, and what do they do, they unearth Orford (or vice-versa I can`t remember). Good systems in place down there and getting better what with the local development restructure now and the push into Fiji.

wasn't Broncos and Cowboys getting money from News? Even the Raiders were for a short period. Some clubs get money from "pokie dens" to develop players. Whats your point?
Breaking news: Donkey only just realises that some clubs have benefitted from their owners pumping money (lots and lots of money in some cases) into them lol

Are you really this naive or do you just play dumb out of stubbornness?

It was reported that the Storm spent more on football operations than every club bar the Broncos in the early 2000s. In Melbourne's case they spent $4m per annum more than they generated from football operations. The shortfall was covered by News Ltd. We all know what the money was spent on.

Cowboys and Broncos never spent more than they made from football operations to run elite development programs. There was a short period of time when the Cowboys needed assistance to survive in the 90s and early 00s. They weren't given millions to squander on elite development programs.

Why do you pretend the Storm never had any advantages provided to them ny News Ltd?

You make it sound as if they were a downtrodden rags to riches success story. Without News Ltd the Storm wouldn't be where they are today. It's incredibly disingenuous to compare the amount of money News Ltd spent on the Storm to the peanuts they gave the Broncos, Cowboys and Raiders.

Don't be so bloody disingenuous.

Storm spent money they didn't have to gain an artificial advantage over every other club during a period when most clubs were broke, knowing full well it would be covered by News Ltd.

News Ltd held a 50% stake in the ARL until 2012.

News Ltd used their position as a stakeholder to give the Storm an unfair advantage over every other club. Fans of the other clubs have every right to be pissed off because their Foxtel subscriptions were helping News Ltd and Storm pull off the biggest rort in the history of Australian sport. For some one who likes to whinge about every little thing, you sure are quiet on this scandal.

If that's the case then why do you ridicule the Dolphins for finishing 13th in their debut season, you bloody hypocrite?

Dolphins won their first four games before they were decimated by injuries and suspensions to key players.

Perth isn't Brisbane.

Perth is a parochial fumbleball city. TV ratings in Perth for the Eagles and Dockers nosedived when they had a shit season. If a Perth-based NRL team has a similar run then it will be disasterous for its bottomline.

and eels were reported to be takign $5mill from the pokie den to cover FC operation costs for numerous years. What dont you understand about owners putting in money back then?

Bollox, Cowboys got millions from News ltd to stay afloat, then the FC were getting $1-2mill a year from the LC to spend on football operations. Again nothing at all wrong with that, most clubs were leaning on their owners to cover costs.

Storm have had plenty of support to become the valuable asset to the NRl they have become. First from their owners then some support from the NRL above and beyond the grant.
A good lesson to be learnt maybe about investing to make a new business successful?

as did most clubs in that era. They were all losing money and required extra funds from somewhere.
Please News ltd owned clubs and spent their money on those clubs. That was their choice as owners.

I havent. I predicted they'd finish 12th-13th before they kicked a ball and I was right. Its where most new clubs start from.

Perth doesn't need to be Brisbane.

Hang on its parochial to AFL but their tv dropped? Doesnt sound very parochial to me lol.
Again Nostradamus based on what? A few years being shthouse sure, one season? yeh nah.
Eagles last year had the worse season in the clubs history. Finished the year with a $2mill profit + WAFC $2.6mill payment, 42k crowd avg and 103k record members lol. Sure the fans really abandoned them!
