Then we are back at the start with no choice in front of us.

Murphy is the Lyon heir. He probably retires next Ashes along with Khawaja and Haze. It's going to be a big thing in 12 months.

If Jenner is right then Lloyd Pope is just about to show us a bit more.
Bailey/McDonald/Cummins don't show much faith in Murphy either. The way Murphy got treated, only bowling 2 overs in that 4th innings run chase at Headingley last Ashes when the fast bowlers conceded around 5 runs/over, says it all. There's no way in a million years Cummins would've given Lyon only 2 overs to bowl if Lyon was out there on the field in that situation where Australia could've wrapped up the series with a win.

Furthermore, Lyon has made it clear he wants to play in the 2027 Ashes tour. If his wish comes true, that is long enough for another spinner at Shield level to have emerged and usurp Murphy to be Lyon's successor as the spinner in the Test XI.

Although I've only seen his performances in the BBL/T20 format, Lloyd Pope does have potential.

First session tomorrow is the make-or-break session for the Aussies.

They can somehow pull off a Houdini and skittle the Indian line up, it will still be a tough run chase (but not impossible).

On the other hand, India continues on from where they left off and can bat at least for most of tomorrow, a heavy defeat for the Aussies is on the cards

At the moment, the bowlers are just simply bowling the ball like there's no plan in how to dismiss the Indian batsmen, and the field placings are uninspiring.

Cummins tactical ability will be put to the test throughout this series

That might be a NSW thing.

Funny thing actually. Growing up I never got involved in the state divide in cricket. I just thought we were picking the best XI each Summer. Shane Watson figured it out and moved to Sydney.

They said Ponting didn't support Lyon early on either. The spinners are the easiest to cart around at the end of the day. It's hard to back them if the leak runs and Pope tends to be costly.

Not all on him though, coaches have a big say

Lyon should be thankful he made his test debut just at the right time. The start of his career coincided with the beginning of Clarke's captaincy in the 2011 tour of Sri Lanka (some will say that Clarke did captain the final test of the 2010/11 Ashes, but only as a fill-in due to Ponting's injury. Didn't replace Ponting as the official captain until after the 2011 World Cup)

Had Lyon debuted under Ponting's leadership, there's a very high chance his career would've gone the same way as Casson/White/Krezja/Hauritz/McGain that were mercilessly tossed out like a used condom under Ponting's leadership.

Punter wasn't a fan of spinners. Even Warne referred to him in past interviews (such as the Cricket Legends one with Robert Craddock) as a fast-bowlers captain, and that spinners were just simply used as an afterthought.

Pontings captaincy was over when Lyon came in. I think spinners were his weakness as a captain, aside from Warne and Magill who were both elite, no spinner really thrived under him. Michael Clarke as a captain backed his spinners and Lyon immediately nailed down a place in the side.

If I remember correctly the Australian team were in Adelaide before a tour of Sri Lanka. Clarke wanted a spinner to bowl a net session to him and was told the groundsman bowled offies for the shield side.

One net session later Clarke insisted Lyon be on the plane.

Innocent times.

Clarke was the last call the shots captain. Or as close as you can get to one at least. I enjoyed his time as captain even with the downsides.

Think he’d already done well, Warnie’s mate Berry was instrumental at first class level, don’t think Clarke was relevant in discovering him

We've all seen this script before. India will get to lead of 400+ with some easy. Our innings will come and we'll make it look like the pitch has snakes all over it, skittled for 200 odd.

What's the point about Berry? He never played at international level.

Yep.

Clarke filled-in as captain for the final test of the 2010/11 Ashes after Ponting was ruled out due an injury. After the 2011 World Cup and mounting criticism in the media, Ponting stood down from the captaincy in all formats, hence Clarke's first test series as official captain was that 2011 tour of Sri Lanka where Lyon made his test debut.

Although some will say he was biased due to his close friendship with Clarke, I do agree with Warne's comments regarding one of the aspects he liked about Clarke's captaincy was his use of Lyon in attacking situations (e.g. field placings, when he chose to bowl Lyon etc).

Clarke didn't simply give Lyon a bowl either as a last resort or just so he could give the fast bowlers a rest, which is what Warne clearly implied about Ponting's use of spinners in the Cricket Legends interview. Jason Krezja had a frustrating experience regarding how he was told to bowl during the 2011 World Cup:
