And Hughes has shown he more than belongs in his 1st test back.

As I've said, I hope Phillip Joel can stick around.

But f**k me, gentle medium pacers from the Lankans on a slowish pitch are hardly retesting the weaknesses which kicked him out of the Test scene on previous occasions.

Don't care what he's done in the Shield this year, his real test will come when the Poms/Saffers are tightening him up with short and fast stuff at the body.

Keep the booze on ice until then.

How is Swann the best spinner in the world when Herath quite clearly has the most wickets this year and is a consistent performer? Then there is Saeed Ajmal, he is a level above Swann too.

Firstly, Hughes wasn't facing world beaters 12 months ago when he was dropped. The Sri Lankans are no worse than the Kiwis and he looked a lot better than he did then.

Secondly, not everyone succeeded in this test. Watson looked like a headless chicken at the crease.

They spend most of their games on spin paradises. If they bowled the same amount of times on the same pitches Swann does, they wouldn't come close to his numbers.

So explain how Swann has been relatively ordinary against India compared to Panesar...good god, I actually like Swann, but world's best, you are kidding. FFS England would take Ajmal over Swann in a millisecond!

Mate it's almost universally acknowledged that Herath & Ajmal >> Swann. If you were trying to justify Swann over these blokes to cricket commentators and purists they laugh you out the building. Swann is good but even in India, Panesar has been out performing him. Ajmal ran through England in UAE not too long ago. He also has performed in Australia and in England. Not sure about SA as I can't remember the last time Pakiston toured.

Boycott agrees with me.

Doesn't matter.

The fact is that the better attacks in the world are going to immediately pepper Hughes at the body to tighten him up and then try and get him nicking to the slips once they've closed up his scoring options.

This was one of the main reasons he got the punt, because he was a gimmie wicket to any bowling attack that used their collective brains.

So until then, judgement should be reserved.

Yes, he is looking to score more around the wicket instead of just poking hard at everything outside off, but none of the Lankans are roughing him up enough to really sort him out.

It's a pity he didn't get to prove his worth against the Saffers instead of Quiney. At least he couldn't have done any worse.
