Even I wouldn't be calling to put Harris who is a diabolical crab at test level. My grandma could score runs at the Junction Oval in Shield cricket it's not hard to score quick when the ball doesn't move a millimetre there!

Clear as day they want Green in and he's a much better 4. He is not a 6, he's a top order bat.

Look for Pucovski (ideally) to replace Khwaja when the time comes. This might be the challenge Smith needs, as bad as his form has looked he's still averaged 40+ the last year

Pucovski won't be back.

Then we wait for Ward, Hunt, etc. We do not play awful test players like Harris who can't bat at that level...and yet his fielding is even worse than his batting! He's already lost us a test with his horrid fielding in the Ashes!

Last opener thinks Harris is best option.

speaking of which, how come you don't substantiate your argument for Harris with his stats ?

Only because you've been so polite: Harris scored a century & 50 in tour games against Pakistan.

My choice Bancroft is leading run scorer in shield but alas not selected.

JL talks up Marcus Harris because they're both Scarborough lads here in WA.

Marcus Harris doesn't even average 40 despite having played a million Shield games at the MCG and Junction Oval.

I wouldn't be trusting Warner who is lucky he can play cricket...

Not as if Warner was an opener much before opening in tests...Khawja was a middle order bat.

Yeah, I'd take Warner's opinion on cricket over everybody here..

His numbers at comparable stage of career are equal or better than Langer & Hayden. Not everybody hits ground running in test cricket like mark Waugh or Michael clarke or David Warner..

If we are talking test numbers Harris is at the bottom in terms of averages and 100s.

At 14 tests each:

- Langer 2 centuries at 37
- Hayden 2 centuries at 29
- Harris 0 centuries at 25

Harris has played the majority of his tests at home (11 of 14). Langer and Hayden about 50/50.

Age was mentioned earlier in the thread which is another factor. Harris is 31, Hayden was 29 and Langer was 28.

Just checked Langer & Hayden both scored centuries in 14th tests. Like age much of muchness..

Hayden was obviously going to do ok if given an extended term...

Langer probably the better comparison, as at times he looked like he didn't have the game for it (tbf mainly against Ambrose and Walsh) - but evolved and obviously had talent and character

Your parameters not mine.

Fudge the numbers to 12 tests and it looks a bit better for Harris, change it to 11 and he is back at the bottom again.

Won't be a talking point after tonight anyway. Harris would be at long odds to be named in the test squad against the WI.

Apart from being the leading scorer in shield this year and last, isn't Bancroft also a very good slips and bat pad fielder?

Doesn't matter, he won't be picked.
