irrelevant imo, Richards, Dravid and many other giants had their average fall away...

Viv remains the best I've seen, his average in tests should have been higher - as it was... but there are few batsmen that the best bowlers have been scared to bowl at - he's the one, he destroyed everyone.

Ponting at his peak was a wonderful player too - and seems a decent commentator, which is presumably why 9 don't hire him

I actually reckon Punter is a pretty rubbish commentator, tbh. Just as a tangent

haven't watched too much BBL, but when I've seen him, I can't think of a 9 commentator aside from Lawry that I think's better... but just my opinion

Yes, glad we have him over here - but he's just a special man imo - Warne probably thinks he's a selfish prick though

Nah, even Warnie loves AB.

First captain, AB backed him, Warnie became a superstar under him.

TBH think that it's just that the Border legacy was established before Warne's - Waugh's up there for mine, but Warne thinks he's superior

Heh.

Okay, and in a descending order, who do you have ahead of Punter?

I'm not going to play some sort of pedants Jeopardy with you. I don't rate him as a commentator. He is in a big pile with a lot of others I don't rate as commentators. Ordering them specifically because you want to make some kind of daft argument out of it is just obsequious and redundant.

Interesting response.

You volunteered that you did not think that Punter is a good commentator in your opinion, in opposition to JJ's praise for Ricky.

I was merely interested whether any Australian commentators other than Border (who is the only quality commentator in your opinion) is thought by you to be a better commentator than Ricky.

But I have now lost interest in your opinion of Australian commentators better than Punter.

Quite possibly.

Warne is more of a superstar than S Waugh. The great Australian team could both handle Warne being banned with MacGill, just as it carried on under Punter for a years post Steve Waugh. Neither were individually bigger than the great team unlike arguably Bradman playing for a trial team against the then national team.

Warne will always be the bigger superstar than Waugh, rightly or wrongly, just as he is over Murali, rightly or wrongly.

Warne's legacy is in line with Tendulkar's, it does not matter whether McGrath, Murali, Donald, Younis or Akram were better bowlers or not. Just as it does not matter if Sangakarra, Lara, S Waugh, R Ponting, Kallis and Dravid were better batsman than Tendulkar or not.

Warne and Tendulkar have achieved super stardom in the modern era that no cricketer, bar the Don, has achieved previously.

Someone should tell Warne that he does not need to bring up ugly old war stories that can only hinder his legacy's image, not improve upon it.

On another note, heard Craig McMillan offer his thoughts on Radio Sport.

Just a sorry interview.

Talked about our great home record,
how we didn't play terrible shots on the first morning but just got good balls,
about how what a shame it was we lost the toss,
lamented the bad no-ball call

Fine line between positive and delusional, we got absolutely schooled Mac.
Unless we go up several big notches it's not going be any different next time.

always liked Porky

Bradman is different, clearly, but on the other two just throwing some names around - Keith Miller, Gary Sobers, George Headley, Ian Botham, Imran Khan, Kapil Dev, Viv Richards, Neil Harvey, Dennis Lillee, perhaps even Jeff Thomson and our own Richard Hadlee say hello

They might not have had the million dollar Nike endorsments, but they were superstars that people flocked to see - Botham was huge (in many ways)

Not going to get into a debate, but suffice to say I think you're stretching it

Australians always have, I think it's a conspiracy

Lot of likeable cricketers in NZ, IMO. Always have been. McMillan, Parore, Astle, Fleming, Harris....there were a lot from that sort of era. I was a huge Chris Cairns fan, that didn't end too well it seems

He was a big part of the local cricket scene here too...terrific bloke, it seemed. I suppose even the best of us aren't immune to temptation.
