When you think about great players like Martin offiah, Jonathan Davies etc who switched straight into first grade from union Im staggered we don’t raid union for snr talent constantly if we have a player development depth problem.
Here’s the post I responded too

I think PR makes some good points . Trying to lure Fringe college Players or NFL rejects ,probably good way to throw money away , for little return. USA has a rugby league competition Probably better to support that , and maybe get more Americans in it. Play a few top games over there to from rep teams here. encourage a viewing audience from over there. And support Pacific Islands , PNG , etc.
USA also has an indoor , quick version of the game , Canadian league, and European league For the fringe players . Why would they come here to try a sport they've never played ? Despite its alledged simplicity ,Like most things ,even the seemingly simple ones You dont get to elite level over night. Coming over here Unlike for Basketball players( who are still on NBA radar,it would take them off NFL radar and remove them from ANY chance of ever getting into NFL. Not sure about pay rates either but a military career for a good athlete over there would possibly be more attractive financially as well.

Meanwhile, back in the real world where the nrl continues to slash grass roots funding:

The Sunshine Coast rugby league senior men’s competition will be reduced to seven teams in 2023 with the reigning premiers Maroochydore Swans and the Gympie Devils unable to field A-grade sides.

To the best of my knowledge, Senior Mens competitions have never got a cent from the ARLC and associated bodies, and are funded purely by the respective clubs themselves.

I'm not saying that they SHOULDN'T get funding from the ARLC, but thats they way I've always understood it to work.

I really love the ambition of a 20 team comp by 32 but I don’t think the US is the answer.

Why would you look to the NRL over the CFL or the XFL? Added on that Rugby USA is already trying to recruit failed college players with the promise of being able to go to the Olympics.

I think the better option is to look to further consolidate the strong hold league has in Queensland.

Look for a team in Perth as it opens up another time slot and something the NRL does far better than the AFL is not having two games ever clashing.

Outside of that I would need more information on the idea of a PNG/Pacifika team based in Cairns partly funded by Pacific Sports Australia before I made an opinion.

Also with the US I don’t think a few former collage players is really going to add to the interest of the NRL over there

Wouldnt it come through the state body who gets its money from the ARLC?

When I said ARLC I meant the state bodies. I don't think they give much or any "funding" to Senior Clubs.

There role is in the administration and officials only

What does QRL and NSWRL spend $20mill plus a year on?

Juniors and running rep teams, from what I understand. Funding some of the local administration, match officials, development officers and programs.

For example there are guys playing local footy in Cairns on $30 to 40k contracts with cars and accommodation arranged for them (and a side job). None of that comes from the QRL.

Also a lot on State of Origin costs (including player payments etc.)

I think the 'Athleticism' of US athletes is over-rated. Look at the US Soccer system. Their philosophy is to get good pure athletes, train their skills = success. However Team USA sucks, they get clowned around by players who are far inferior athletes to their squad. Guys like Messi and Modric wouldn't even get a look at in the US system yet they are world class players.

There are so many other reasons why players have success; love of the sport, understanding of the game from watching and playing since childhood. Skills honed through hundreds/thousands of hours of practice and game time.

Go after failed college graduates? How many players can just pick up a totally new sport at age 22? Especially if they don't know it or haven't followed it?

Then they have to pack up and leave to a foreign country, no family or friends to get a career that might be paid a few 100K a year?

If you had the discipline to be a good college athlete in the USA and managed to Graduate (even if your grades were massaged) chances are you will still be relatively successful in the US especially given how their labour market has been over the last 3-4 years.

With all due respect you’re hammering on about college football but what’s your level of knowledge of college football beyond that it exists and there are great athletes in that realm?
Many college football players have transitioned to other sports like MMA with little to no fanfare, similarly Mason Cox was a D1 basketball player at a major school in Oklahoma state and has become a relatively big name in the AFL, how many people in Oklahoma do you think even know what AFL is?
In terms of athletic ability what you’re looking for are guys who are over 6ft, 95kg and can run under 4.6 seconds in the 40 as a starting point in terms of athletic profile, without counting exactly the numbers I’d estimate there’d be less than 40 guys who would fit that criteria out of this years draft prospects, 259 players are going to get drafted this year and I’d say around 150 more will be signed as undrafted free agents so anyone who fits your ideal athletic profile is going to find their way on to a NFL roster
