Great effort by all clubs, this chase for members has been an outstanding success for the game as a whole. The only dark cloud is the South’s numbers which have the potential to make a mockery of the competition. Next year there needs to be clear rules and independent audits.

:?... good call

Souths do what all 17 AFL clubs do
are they making a mockery of their numbers too ?

To clarify, it's fantastic Souths have sold as many memberships as they have regardless of ticketed or non-ticketed. The only concern is the translation of the ticketed membership into bums on seats. As awesome as memberships and immediate money in the bank are, revenue on match day is also very very important and Souths need to increase their crowd averages.

not really
their Crowd average is around 16K for a side with average success
if they are a top four side in 2011 , which they have the potential to be .. it will top 20K this year.

Positive growth across the majority of clubs is ultra encouraging.

We need this as a game and the culture shift is just beginning in terms of club memberships and ST's

not sure about all the other clubs

but souths are one of a very few number of clubs who count "football" or "voting" memberships in their numbers.

im certain dogs and dragons dont - and broncos have shareholders so they dont either.

i think dogs have around 2k in additional voting members, but becaue of constituion/other issues cant count them

dragons have JV issues - meaning they cant count st george members and illawarra members.

i think when RC/PHAC took over the constitiution was changed at souths so they could be counted. Also i believe there may have beeen a massive jump in football memberships after they were kicked out of the comp

Ticketed or non-ticketed a side, this whole thing is about bringing $$$ into the clubs. Souths obviously think this is the best way to maximise their profits, good on them. The numbers race is really just there to play on fans competitive spirit.

Looking at the numbers and prices i'd say its a damn near certainty that souths are making more money from memberships than any other club.

Non ticketed memberships are a great source of revenue for sporting clubs. If other clubs can't take advantage of it to bad, souths shouldn't be insulted for it.

Parramatta membership is also membership of the football club with voting rights.

It is up from a few hundred a few years back and resulted in the recent new board. The initial recruitment was started in this forum

Penrith launched a V.I.P Membership on the weekend if you are a Member of the Leagues Club and the Football team. Some benefits like cheap beers before games, V.I.P parking etc.

I have no idea what you're on about, so I'll clear it up for you.

South Sydney Membership IS membership of the football club. When you buy your membership (be it ticketed or non-ticketed), you become a member of the football club. Once you have been a member for 3 consecutive years, you have voting rights. Pretty simple really.

Im not confused.

Just pointing out - that Bulldogs and Dragons do not currently include their voting Football Club Members - so comparisons are a bit lopsided.

Members are members fullstop. The more members of all clubs the better for the game. Many fans can't get to games as they live interstate and have families. I am sick of people trying to argue that this shouldn't count. Why shouldn't their contribution count? We can all talk about ticketed members and compare them to bums on seats.

Last season Souths had a healthy crowd average. I wish we would talk more about the growth of the game than try and tarnish good things in it.

Souths average more than stmerge.

I don't get it.

Souths have over 19,000 total members, the most in the NRL.

Souths are in the top 3 ticketed memberships in the NRL (currently with 11,729), despite being an average team for 20-odd years. The other two being the current premiers and a one-team town who has tasted nothing of failure.

It was Souths initial push for memberships that started this whole membership campaign over the last couple of years.

We are the leaders in this area and should be commended for being so.

EDIT: I'll also throw in there that Souths non-ticketed memberships cost $85 - some clubs offer ticketed membership for around the same mark!

I think a few people have misunderstood what I'm saying. I'm not having a dig at Souths per se, because it's fantastic for them to have so many members. I'm simply suggesting ticketed memberships hold greater importance as they equal bums on seats. Bums on seats then equals merchandise and F&B purchases, and therefore increased revenue to the club.

This goes for every club, but I mention Souths specifically as they appear to have the greatest proportion of non-ticketed members.

How the f**k is it even possible to have a crowd average lower then the amount of memberships you have when you also take into account all the walk ups of the streets and other fans who are not members turning up to games.

Souths 18,716 memberships + all the other Souths fans who turn up who are not members = 17k crowd average,LOL @ Souths.

It's ignorant to think that every member goes to every game even if they do have a full ticketed memberships as well as those members who aren't ticketed, thats how it works out.

To the one who defended Souths having a "good average" and saying if they made the top four their average would increase... the Bulldogs with a smaller membership base than Souths, averaged over 20,000 last year. They finished 13th.
