It's too soon to say but ideally if you were to rate each hopeful on both their attack and defence Mullen, Pearce & Campese would out-rank the others.

With that said I honestly think it's too soon to make a definite call. You'd have to say Carney is in the box seat but I believe a lot of that has to do with hype than performance really. We know what he's capable of, he's a Dally M medalist after all but I don't believe he's the reason the Sharks are playing as well as they are. It's probably for another thread, but I believe there are other factors that are as important if not more so than T. Carney yet he seems to be reaping 40% of the credit (Gallen the other 60% of course).

Personally, I think NSW would be better off to give Mullen another year off from Origin football, and let him spend more time with Newcastle and Bennett, so that he can equip himself with the proper mental tools to deal with such a high pressure series.

I've only seen Carney step up for about 20mins in a big game, and that was to get the Roosters back into the match against the Tigers in the 2010 preliminary final. Him and Pearce were constantly pushing up around the middle, which Pearce eventually scored from it. The other try was from Carney chipping the ball over the top and regathering it to score.

He's still a gun though and hasn't really played a ton of big matches to be fair.

Carney is getting unwarranted hype.

Not saying he'll be a bad choice for the blues, but hardly a standout choice, especially to overtake the incumbent, Soward.

I didn't see the Raiders vs the Warriors, but I get the feeling come origin 2 or 3 Campese will hit his straps and be over his knee issues and it's gonna make it tough on the selectors.

I'll try and unbiasedly rank the NSW halves and keep in mind a 8 or 9 out of 10 for defence doesn't mean that i think said half can defend as well as Cameron Smith, these are halves ratings.

Andrew Johns would nail a 10 in all of those categories

I don't know who Ricky Stuart likes as far as halves. But I wouldn't be surprised if it just remains Soward/Pearce.

They did a solid job last year.

I don't think Carney's done enough to overtake Soward, although he does have that combo with Pearce already.

If Budeurs is the 9 and Gidley is on the bench, that gives Mullen a massive look in also.

Someone roll a dice?

Carney is the great white hope....he has everything apart from that mental toughness need at SOO...

He is talented, but is that enough. I feel that we are at that stage that NSW needs to take a punt on him for some good attacking ability. In saying that we need solid defence to support him.

There is every chance his first half will be ordinary at best, but in 2nd half he seems to step it up. Atleast thats at the NRL level.

Main issue is if he goes to 5/8 is Pearce enough to support him inside and who follows him in defence.

Gal seems to want Carney there and I feel thats enough for me to see him succeed. However Gal cannot be next to him ever single minute of the game, so can Carney take charge when its needed. Or is he still a fair way of from being a genuine ball player in his own right...ie Lockeyer, Johns, Thurston etc!

Campese ought to have at least 7 for his long kicking game, and at least 8 for leadership.

I may be a little harsher than you but here is mine:
Code:

Terry Campese 8 6 7 8 5 8 6 48/70
Todd Carney 6 6 7 7 6 7 7 46/70
Peter Wallace 7 6 6 7 5 7 8 46/70
Jarrod Mullen 6 8 7 6 5 6 7 45/70
Jamie Soward 8 4 7 8 6 6 6 45/70

Campese and Carney have well above average running games. Carney has more speed but Campese is a much stronger runner (when he decides to run).

Wallace's running game would have to be 1/10. I don't think I've seen him make a break in five years of watching him at the Broncos.

Wallace a 5 in defence?

Are you serious bro?

Both Campese and Mullen are superior in defence than Carney or Soward too.

Rating players kicking games etc has little value in Origin. It's all about who will lift for the occasion and who will be overawed. I still think of all the half options Campese and Pearce standout as the mentally toughest players, with Wallace just behind. Carney, Mullen and Soward may have more talent is certain areas but to me they are players who's confidence fluctuates a lot more and if they have made a couple of bad plays early in a game they hide.

Yeh Campese is just as prone to go missing as any other NSW half as is Pearce.

Any league fan can see clearly that to the man guys like Soward, Mullen, Carney and Campese are just as, and in certain areas even more so, talented than Thurston and Cronk - it's the mental toughness and confidence that really seperates QLD's halves from any combination we can name. Heck even 2nd year DCE has shown he has so much more mental fortitude than our best halves.

No NSW half is excluded from that flaw. Wallace is the closest but lacks the raw talent of the others.

Now we play the waiting game. CvC coming up soon. Let's see how that turns out. I'm just begging for some consistency across the park though. Try pick roughly the same team with minimal changes. It's the best thing NSW can do!
