2013 QLD Origin Side

I doubt that Harrison will make the side this year. His form has become one-dimensional as he has struggled with injuries. What few ball-playing skills he had earlier in his career have been archived.

I really hope that the selectors turf Gillett and Taylor (although they couldn't resist his impact if he finds some form in club footy) while giving Teo a decent shot and maybe Papali. We need youth in at least one of the rotations. McGuire is a certainty off the bench if he maintains his 2012 form.

As a Blues supporter, I'd love to see more of T'eo in maroon.
He always seems to show his mug while the goings good, not so much when the goings tough.
Will prob prove me wrong this year, but you can only back on form.

I disagree.

Te'o was generally the Broncos best when the rest of the side was busted in 2010 & 12. How he'll go with more time will be very interesting. He's come a long way since 09.

Because Smith is the one player who, if injured, we cannot replace sufficiently without a proper acting half. If he got injured we'd be completely f**ked. Who would you have replace him with no specialist dummy-half in the team? Gillett, Barba? f**k that.

If that ever happens during a game i reckon we'd move cronk to hooker, thirston to half (and running the show) with someone like Harrison as a stop gap 6!

Not sure if you're talking about the same Teo. Ben Teo was THE go-to man for the Broncos last year and will be sadly missed. Matt Gillett started the year as the boom second-rower, but by the end of the year Ben Teo had surpassed Gillett and was the one member of the Broncos who could be counted on - in either attack or defence.

He'll have to adjust his defence this year with no shoulder charges aloud, but I have no doubt he'll succeed. Ben Teo is also a good guy to have around the team - great sense of humour.

Couple of thoughts:

1 - On locks. There are so many different kinds of locks now, and coaches choose a particular style of lock depending on their team.

Locks can be extra props (Myles/Gallen) tacklebots (Johnson), ball-players (Mateo, Graham), alternative dummy-halves (Young). In QLD's case we have enough creativity in the spine and some dominant front rowers, so it makes sense to have a lock who does a shitload of defensive work to keep our other forwards fresher in attack.

2 - On Yow Yeh. Zero chance of playing Origin this year, which is a damn shame because he's very talented. Ash Graham is NOT barely FG standard as one previous posters said. He was definitely rubbish a few years ago, but he's got the fumbles out of his game and learned how to read the play. He's a very solid finisher and makes a lot of metres for a winger.

Having said that, age is not on his side. I think the selectors will go with Hodges at right centre and Tate on the wing. If either of them are unavailable, O'Neill or Gagai will be the winger - Nielsen just doesn't have the pace.

3 - There are a couple of smokies who are a very good chance of making their Origin debut this year. One is Papalii. The other is Gavin Cooper. He's very quick for a big man, plays 80 mins, gets through a mountain of work and has a really good club combination with JT. I personally think he would be a better choice for the left fringe than either Harrison or Parker.

4 - I would LOVE to see Berrigan back in an Origin jumper. He's one of my all-time favourite players and still has awesome utility value. Anyone else is probably a waste of a bench spot. Unless we do something NSW-like and pick a specialist centre on the bench or something...

Which brings me to 5.

Daley Cherry Evans. Is 2013 the year he makes his debut off the bench? He's the most talented young QLD half in the comp at the moment, and JT and Cronk are both turning 30 this year, we need to start thinking about succession plans.

After 2 rds....that's as far as I want to go.

I'm looking for Papali......to add some starch.

Thaiday might make it onto the bench IF he lifts his game.

Not sold that DCE is the best option for the utility.

Justin O'neill....a centre spot?

Boyds showing some early form.

After being a staunch advocate of Dave Taylor.....he really let us down last year. I don't think he has what it takes to succeed in origin.

Harrison is too one dimensional.

I said it last year that we're lacking some mongrel in the back row......

still not a lot of choices.

Only changes I'd consider making at this stage is going with a different right hand combination. I reckon Hodges will get his spot but his defensive work against Manly was very alarming. He's had those problems for awhile too, won't take much for the Blues to exploit it. Would much rather we give Tate that spot and allow somebody like Gagai or O'Neil on the wing, add some strike power of our own.

Lillyman's form off the bench has been one of the few shining lights for the Warriors, he's in the frame for sure.

Doubt Gagai will be in the frame for at least the first if not 2nd origin considering he'll be out for at least a month with ankle issues. Don't mind the choice of O'Neill should injuries dictate terms.

Agree about Lillyman.
He might be out of sight at the Warriors ,but last season & the few games this yr he has been very impressive coming on after about 20.
Really bends the defensive line & gets through alot of defence.
Qld has 5 props in the frame at the moment .Scott,Shillo,Hannant,McGuire & Lillyman.
Hope all have an injury free season .

Inglis is wasted in the centres, If he gets a share of kick returns that will bring him more in the game.

How is he wasted? How many tries has Inglis scored in the centers? How many has he set up for Boyd?

Plus Tate can't play on the left.

Can't see it being anything but this, barring a massive lapse in form and/or injury.

He is a very good Attacking player ,Far better than Nielsen.
Neilsen is the better defender..
Depends what Mal Is looking for.

Surely with Greg Inglis on one side of the field, Mal would want to balance attack with defense. Besides, one would say Queensland is not short of attacking options without Hodges.
