This commemorative jersey is a tribute to the 1974 Western Division team that won Amco Cup. The jersey will be worn by Penrith players at appearances in the lead up to the Panthers Vs Sharks game to be hosted in Bathurst.

I must say, any new team admitted to the NRL should really think about using Dark Green and white as its colours. Looks very nice and be very distinctive.

There is a 2 page article in this week's Rugby League Week about jersey and merchandising sales. Apparently last year, rugby league the most sporting merchandise in Australia earning $166.5 million in licensing fees compared to the AFL who had $140 million - and that is without taking into account moneys from State of Origin. The same article says the ARU made a whole $2.4 million in merchandise revenue for the same period. Only the A-League would not divulge any figures.

Also the article says revenue for NRL sales is split this way:

  1. For jersey sales: The NRL club gets 80% of the wholesale price of their jersey. The NRL then divides up the remaining 20% into a pool which is evenly distributed among all clubs.
  2. For all other off-field merchandise: The revenue is split with 40% to the club, 40% into a pool which is evenly distributed amongst all clubs, and 20% to the NRL.
The article goes on to list the top selling jerseys in various codes. They are:

  1. New Zealand Warriors
  2. South Sydney Rabbitohs
  3. Sydney Roosters
  4. Brisbane Broncos
  5. St George-Illawarra Dragons.

Interesting to see that Rabbitohs, Roosters, and Dragons are in the top 5, even though they keep the same design from year to year. Take note jersey makers.

Again this argument that the Dragons and Rabbitohs proves something because they sell can be flawed. They are the biggest teams in the comp of course they sell. Roosters would have been because of the premiership. There is no way they are usually in the top selling teams.

Id argue though that they have such a huge following becuase they have such a strong core image...

Red V on white = you know its the Dragons
Red and Green stripes = you now its Souths.
Tri-colours in a V= Roosters

They will trot out just as many alternative jumpers as every other club, and those would be the jerseys most sold, but these alternatives would base much of their popularity on being such a recognisable derivative of the core image...

Aru 2.4 million pretty poor

Considering their diminishing fanbase I'm surprised it is that much. Must have been the Lions tour that boosted it.

Suprised Storm aren't up there. Their fanbase might be smaller but go to a Storm game and 99.9% of the fans are wearing merch.

Not surpised at NZ, any city in Australia you go to you see Kiwis wandering around in Warriors jerseys. Makes you realise how poor their membership department is.

Oh. Okay. That sounds like a pretty naff excuse to trot that jersey out again. I may be biased nere but I think the Storm Superman jersey was so much better!

True, but Rusty does have his motive to promote it - as do Fox

Rusty was bloody good in the film btw - watched the film for the first time the other night

On the flip side, the Warriors seem to be number 1

The current Warriors home and away jerseys are absolute classics and fans are probably voting for them to stay that way by purchasing them in large numbers

The Warriors have a huge following right across Australia. Look at Warriors attendances at away games in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. They have large numbers at all games.

Most of these fans seem to rock up in jerseys. That's Warriors fans buying up big right across Australia as well as in NZ. Few other, if any teams have that sort of potential.

The Warriors would have much bigger member numbers if they actually sold an out of town membership to attend the games in Sydney too. Huge opportunity missed there for the Warriors. I'm glad they're selling their jerseys in large numbers though

Interesting read. Wonder how much the retailer mark up is from the wholesale price?
