Then shouldn't we rename NRL as an international team could win it?

Maybe NBA should renamed.

A welsh team could win English Premier League:?.

Maybe a-league should be renamed ANZ-league.

Have you seen the NRL logo?
It is an Australian competition with no involvement from anyone from PNG, Fiji or New Zealand

Green and Gold and the Southern Cross. Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi!

I like to think of it like this....

Each of these teams (Penrith and Norths??) arent just representing their fans, they are representing their entire division. Theyve proved that they are the best team in their State, now they are trying to prove that their State League is the best in the country (digging into the State-vs-State parochialism that RL is famous for).

Short term they will probably begin to add teams from Victoria/SA/WA/NZ/Pacific Islands/ect. to the QLD Cup and NSW Cup.

Eventually (if the interest is there) id like to see them divided the States up further (NSW, QLD, Vic/WA/SA/Tas, NZ, Pacific Islands = 5 different state groups.) Begin the season with local games, then find the top 3 or 4 teams from that group for the year and put them into a combined finals series.

This would bring back that community feel of amature and semi-professional team brands that NRL has totally lost. It would have the nice combination of community oriented football and the opportunity to represent your town and your State League on Gand Final day.

How good would it be to see a country NSW/QLD team paying off against a suburban Melbourne/Perth/Adelaide team on national TV. I think this is the way to develop the game in VFL territory and create team brand with the local feel. Rather than just plopping a brand new NRL team there (can do that as well) you develop local club brands in the same way NSWRL did 1908-1980.

We had the Country NSW Bulls team play the WA state team last year at nib stadium, WA won amazingly!! I think a WA state rep team could put up a fight in a one off but obviousy both the NSW and Qland cup sides are far far stronger.

its a bit weird as it is in fact a club championship not a state championship. They'd have been better calling it the NRL challenge cup or something and that would give the potential to grow it in a different way when other clubs in other states grow stronger. Still the concept is a start I guess.

If the game had the money and the desire, and there was a reason to do so you could have a challenge cup style comp for non NRL clubs nationally with the qland and NSW cup teams coming in at a later rounds so the WA,NT,VRL,SARL,PNG,NZ clubs played early rounds etc but it would be very expensive. Would be good to see some boost to the grass roots though, Perth now has a semi pro RU team stealing yet more of our RL jnrs, the longer the NRL sits on its hands the harder it will be to grow the game.

Challenge cup without the NRL teams would fail..

Imagine FA cup without Premier League teams,, and flying 25 people from wellington to freemantle via port moresby would be rather expensive

Yeh I know.

The NRL would be better putting its efforts into getting the 3 day affiliated cup screened by SBS or Fox, having a challenge cup between the top 8 affiliated state clubs (ie GF clubs from the 4 states) plus PNG comp with final on GF day prior to the NSWvQland game. At this point anything to grow the game outside NSW and Q'land would be a fricking godsend!!

Do Penrith always wear the NRL team's jerseys? unless I'm much mistaken they have the Telstra premiership badge while the Pride have the State Championship one

Penrith with NRL Telstra Premiership badge and numbers, referees with NRL Telstra premiership on the shirts.

The State Championship doesnt have an official sponsor yet, so they wont be too worried about Telstra getting a bit of extra coverage.

Harvey Norman or something will probably pick it up next year, then they will make it mandatory (probably just one of those big-ass stickers they used for the NRLGF last year...)

They would have changed because of the heat. I would assume the NSW cup team would only have home and away (pink jersey)
