Which might last for 1 weekend...what about the other 2! I don't want to have nothing to watch/follow for a month! It gets boring very quickly.

Well I don't think State of Origin should be 3 weeks in a row. I would like them to keep it 3 weeks between each Origin game, because if a player is injured for a few weeks from an NRL game, or whatever, then they might only have to miss 1 Origin game, instead of all 3, and also 3 weeks of no NRL games in the middle of the season is too long. I would like to see Origin on the Saturday with no NRL games that weekend. Maybe New Zealand can play England on those 3 weeks, and Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, PNG can take play each other, with different opponents each weekend. They could call it the Pacific Cup. Each nation would play 3 games each, and whoever is on top of the ladder wins the Cup. TV ratings might not be as good for Origin on Saturdays, but it will sort of even out when more people watch the NRL games around Origin time. The way it is now, with the Origin players missing from club games, alot of people aren't even watching those games because they know some of them won't be good quality games. It's not fair how some clubs get byes the weekend before the Origin, and others don't.

Queens Birthday Holiday finally has a day time match of some note. Interesting that it took such a long time to come about but could well be a boon long term for the dragons and bulldogs. Might build into something that regulary attracts 35000+? Cant help to think that the panthers, sharks and sea eagles have missed an opportunity to be a part of a special event match. Although this year wouldnt have been a great result in regards of crowd and the quality of the match, an annual day time scg match between the sharks and sea eagles (1973/1978 gfs rehash) on a public holiday could have been something special long term for the two sets of fans, a real culture building exercise.

I don't understand why people think a one off crowd for the travelling soccer giants is somehow embarrassing or a threat to the NRL.

It's virtually a once in a lifetime thing.

First (and probably last) time I've heard Chelsea described as "soccer giants". They're not even the best supported side in London...

So if your not the biggest supported in London (one of the biggest cities in the world) your not big?

Just to let you know, Chelsea has a slightly bigger brand recognition worldwide than the Wests Tigers or Sydney Roosters.

All the bandwagon supporters that jumped on them in the last decade would be out in force.

It was a once-off thing and that's it, I would say full of mainly English and just soccer supporters. I doubt they'd repeat that week in week out.

We would have a similar result if 2 NFL teams came down to play.
Credit were it's due tho, nice crowd.

73,000 for Sydney fc vs tottenham a few days before. And tottenham are a nothing club. 95k for liverpool at mcg two years ago. 83k at anz for Man Utd in the same year. juventus got 60-70k too last year.

In July Real madrid, man city, roma, liverpool will all draw massive crowds when they play here. Deal with it, its a big deal when the major clubs tour. NRL clubs could only dream of something similar.

If the major clubs had a mini tournament during their offseason here, they'd dwarf nrl/afl crowds.

As for the guy claiming Chelseas support is crap... they are the 4th-5th most liked sports team in world sport on facebook at over 40m. Their brand is bigger than arsenal, who you were clearly referring to.

Off course they would but it's a novelty thing, it's not in any way a reflection of the support levels that Soccer has in Australia at a local level.

It's meaningless in the context of NRL crowds.

The thing is, these major clubs tour once in a blue moon - of course they'll attract interest for those flash-in-the-pan moments.

Fans here can see their NRL club up to 20 times a year in Sydney, get real.

Soo is once a year, I bet they weren't logging off premium tickets for $50 for the soccer game, and it was a meaningless friendly. It's a good example of how people will turn out and pay good money if it is an event not just a run of the mill weekly game. NRL super hyped Friday and Sunday game every week at Allianz and ANZ that is a must do weekend event in Sydney every week would help get the 30k plus crowds nrl games should be getting.

Are you claiming that Chelsea coming to Sydney once in a 100 years is the same as FNF?

Or that they have always struggled to sell Origin Tickets?
