It is not really the actual venue it is just the logistics of getting to a stadium.
It is a slog to get there no matter what time or what day...and no matter what form of transport.
If I used public transport to get to the SFS I would have to drive to my local station and possibly catch 2 trains and then walk from central or bus.
Add my kids to that....I'd be spending pretty much most of the day out.
My missus wouldn't love that...
I prefer to spend my weekends with my kids. So I take at least one of them to the footy.
Middle of winter , dark , raining....no way are people going to be going spend 2.5 - 3 hrs round trip going to watch the sharks play in a stadium nowhere near where they are from.
It is just preposterous to even attempt to say people will travel.
It's all well and good if you live 20 mins from the joint but we don't.

I actually enjoy going to the SFS once a year. Train in (50 mins) 2 hour walk to the ground via cricketers (10 schooners) then party on in town afterwards but that's not a realistic proposition for most. If you just go for the game you would spend more time in transit than actually watching football.

I have a box at ANZ stadium. Getting there is a f**ken nightmare from Caringbah and I hate going. Either hours and hours on trains or a $110 taxi. Driving takes at least an hour in congestion the whole way (don't comment unless you have driven north on King Georges at 6pm on a Friday night) and then you can't drink which is shit when you have the company card. I often take mates with me who never venture out there (Hobbits) their first reaction is extreme surprise that there is only one pub near the joint (when we finally arrive).

Getting home is worse. I remember one year I went to the Bledisloe and the trains shit themselves. I had to walk back to Centenery drive in the vain attempt to get a cab; gave up, rang the Mrs, got her out of bed and had to wait under an overpass for 45 mins.

Why would I regularly put myself through that when I can walk to Shark Park in 10 minutes?

Good to see that the Sharks have there fans coming from a 20min radius of Shark park (45mins if the traffic is bad).

And you could still do that 9 times a year, its just that the other 3 might be a big friday night match against the tigers / St geo / Roosters at the SFS in front of 30k,

Seriously mate. You get 12,000 plus at Pirtek against the Raiders at your home ground.
The Sharks get not that much less against the Tits for 1a 2pm game who bring no one, surely you can understand why Shark's fans are more inclined to Shark Park, and that it makes money for the club.

The main point is the club OWNS its ground.
We have membership of over 12,000,not because we play a game or two at ANZ etc,but because we play at home.

I will stay this .if and when ANZ becomes a rectangular with a you beaut roof covered extravaganza of a stadium, then a game against the Eels and or Dogs would be a chance there.

With a chance of getting into the G/F I will be at ANZ with balls, bells and bulls on.Its just that it is a sh*t venue plus the transport getting there is horrendous .

I get Sharks fans wanting to keep all their home games at Shark Park, they have a nice little set up there and it is local to where most supporters live but FMD some of the ‘challenges’ shire folk have with going to games at the SFS is way overstated.

Drive from somewhere like Engadine to Shark Park on game day and it can take up to 45 minutes to get there depending on the expected crowd and how early you want to get there. By that time you are nearly pulling into central on a train.

I live in Caringbah and go to most roosters home games, granted some are on Friday/Thursday or Monday night which is super convenient given I work in the city but it is not that hard to get there on a Saturday or Sunday, 1 hr door to door if you get straight on the bus after your train gets in to central. I don’t have kids so can’t comment on that aspect.

I think the problem is not so much the distance, but the attitude shirelings have in general about leaving the shire for any reason at all. Most see the shire as a self-contained bubble where leaving is not only undesirable, it is an offence to suggest that leaving is necessary or would be a positive experience. Distance is irrelevant to them as well, I know people that will go from Caringbah to Engadine or Sylvania to Menai for whatever reason but will turn their nose up at going from Caringbah to Ramsgate or Kirrawee to Blakehurst for the same experience of equal or better value.

I think at some point they will be forced to move 2-4 home games to the SFS and it will work, especially if the likes of Roosters, Wests, Sharks, Manly and Saints can come up with reciprocal member agreements.

Mate I live in Caringbah and go to the SFS for the roosters Sharks game at the SFS every year.

It's 10 mins to walk to the station
50 odd minutes to central
20 mins walk up the hill to SFS

Then it's a $60-$70 cab ride home or an all station train which late at night feels like 4 hours.

Or;

I can walk to shark park in ten minutes.

Carchs point about 45 mins from engadine was an absolute worst case scenario.

You are right about many shire people's reluctance to venture out of gods country. You don't change an ingrained culture with a stadium deal.

Leave them where they are. They have lost between $1.5mill-$3mill a year for alst few years in their current situation so clearly like not making money. The model they have now is meeting their failing needs and the NRL needs to lose some teams at some point to grow nationally so win-win when they fall over from lack of revenue.

Cronulla is better than Perth

I was offered a job in Perth. Went over there for a week to just check everywhere out.

Was just like. Nope. Sorry PR. I would choose Cronulla any day, riots and all.
