I see that the AFL has a game on in Shanghai this weekend. If only the NRL had got off its arse when the Raiders and Manly wanted to take a game to Guangzhou a few years ago. Anyway, it got me thinking about what initiatives the NRL has to engage the fairly diverse and massive international community in Sydney. Despite making up a fair portion of Sydney, some migrant communities have very little engagement in the NRL and it is a potential untapped source of fans.
Eg, my team, Parramatta is playing at the cavernous ANZ stadium for the next two years. Why not use this as a chance to try and get some of this community through the gates to beef up crowd numbers and grow the supporter base. I remember the Bulldogs did a free entry for NZ and Islander weekend a few years ago which was a hit.
Why not have rolling weeks where free entry is offered to different passport holders each week.Eg, free entry for Indians, Pakistanis and Sri Lankans one week. Next home game would be free entry for Chinese nationals. Over the course of the season each group would have been entitled to one free game. Create a festival type atmosphere around the ground by inviting locals to come and run food stalls and markets outside the stadium etc. Use the week or two before hand to engage with the local communities in their own language trough social media, universities etc. Hopefully a few thousand take up the offer and bring some friends next time. With so much space available in the stadium, why not at least try it. Would be good to make some positives out of using ANZ for two years.
