That's AFL propaganda.
Any comment on your codes low crowd on Good Friday by the way?
The criticism about the AFL's 'low crowd' on Good Friday just shows the difference between what is seen as a 'success' for crowds in the different codes.
The St Kilda Vs North Melbourne Good Friday game got 33,966 to Etihad Stadium on a day that traditionally (up until 2017) has been a day where AFL hasn't been played and all the attention is on religious activities, the Royal Children's Hospital Appeal or heading away for the Easter long weekend.
The Good Friday crowd was actually a 5,000 person boost from a St. Kilda Vs. North Melbourne Friday night game last season at the same ground which got 26,107 in June last year. St. Kilda & North Melbourne are seen as two of the smaller Melbourne teams in the AFL.
But the thing is you can't compare the 'success' between the two codes due to how differently the two competitions are set up. In the AFL all of the Victorian teams have 'homes' within 10-12kms of the CBD. This means that the clubs don't typically represent a 'region' in the same way that Cronulla or Manly due in the NRL. For example how many Cronulla supporters live out in Western Sydney. Yet by comparison a St. Kilda supporter may live in the 'St. Kilda' region but there is still plenty of supporters of the club across the entire city.
