2018 Crowd Watch

The only way they’d be close to 80% full stadiums would be a blackout on local TV, or partial blackout on some games in the local market, but would only work if multiple games were played at the same time, say each round has 9-10 games a week with multiple Sat/Sunday games.
Friday night, Sunday 4pm would be stand alone games with the odd Sunday night thrown in for regional/state public holidays.

This would certainly help in improving crowds. But with Australia only having a small population, and most of that situated in just a handful of cities where just about all the teams are placed, that is highly unlikely to happen. Could you imagine the uproar by Nine and Fox Sports if they were unable to show home games of Sydney teams into that city.

The NBA stadiums are full because a sport that is bigger than NRL has stadiums half the size, and ten times the quality. A season full of sell outs creates massive buzz and demand. New stadiums in Perth and Adelaide were built to a size that sells out half the time. This means fans have to buy memberships and reserved seats. Sydney has missed a massive opportunity to fix their stadium problem.

There is a number of factors that lead to poor NRL crowds, especially here in Sydney. Some of which that some league fans may not even want to admit. One reason, as I have mentioned a number of times is that Sydney has too many teams playing out of it. Solve that and you will be heading in the right direction.

Outside of the AFL, NRL crowds in Australia would be the next best. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that NRL crowds are not poor. Whilst I expect final figures for this year to be up slightly on last year, they will be still down on previous years. Yes you are right about the big money for the game coming from broadcasting. My big concern here is that if people stop attending games, do they eventually stop watch games being broadcasted. The big difference between NRL and NBA crowds is that teams there fill their stadiums 100 percent of the time http://www.espn.com/nba/attendance. How many NRL teams do the same.

Bullshit.

I have attended 20+ NBA games at various venues and they have not all been full houses by any means. In fact, a game in Charlotte I went to last year it was less than 2/3 full (vs Golden State). A lot of teams will announce sell outs but local companies buy bucket loads of tickets at discounted rates off the team to offload to their employees as a reward or to then onsell to ticket re-sellers. It’s a farce.

The Carolina Panthers are just as bad for doing this........

I see this argument a lot, the problem with removing teams is you lose the connections fan have to the game. In an ideal world we would probably have less than 4 teams in Sydney, the problem is there is no way to get there without losing half the supporter base in Sydney. People will not transfer their support to a new team.

When teams with a big fanbase such as the Eels and Dogs are performing like also rans. The Sea Eagles like park footballers, and ANZ one of the ,most unpopular stadiums in the country, that has a big impact on crowds.Plus throw in 6pm and Thursday night scheduling ,you could have 6 teams in Sydney and have the same effect. You are still dealing with the same Sydney traffic infrastructure, whether you have 4,14,or 24 teams.
Hell ,looking at the Cowboys crowd now, it's hardly inspiring in Thurston's last year.

I would be concerned if the new Parra stadium did not bring in the crowds. In fact I think that will bring in crowds ,where ANZ is a bleeding deterrent.

But would the 4 new franchises attract more support then the replaced 4 Sydney sides ?
based on the apathetic attitude of Sydneysiders these days
almost certainly they would

the game doesn't lose much imo

If the new stadium in Parramatta doesn't lead to say, an average increase of 5,000 per game - Nothing will ever boost crowds in Sydney.

if its true that Sydney has become such a cluster F to move around in most of the time & isn't going to get much better , plus Sydneysiders deciding certain venues are beneath them even when their team is playing at them
then Sydney & its NRL fans have become the games biggest problem &
its time to address the problem & some hard decisions need to be made

this entitled attitude of
I have a devine right to have a team , but an equal right not to support them because its all too hard , needs to be brought to an end.

they can't have it both ways

As I stated wait til Parra Stadium is finished ,and the ANZ at least being a rectangular one and the SFS better than the current one.If they don;t work ,then qwerty have a problem.
But I would hardly be cheering crowds at other stadiums this year outside of Sydney ,with the exception of Newcastle.

Well it does because 4 new franchises will not attract as much support as the current teams as it will kill all support in Sydney. Even if you did get the same amount to the games, you will kill TV ratings.

and the schedule is critical too
no good judging a crowd on a Thursday night anywhere in any venue , or 6pm on a Friday
or a game in Canberra on winters night

its all insane

if we get the schedule right in better venues & crowds don't improve
we need a radical overhaul

why would it kill all support in Sydney if 5 teams survive , & TV is becoming an outdated irrelevant medium
opening up new markets will see the game grow , we need to move forward as a sport.

Dogs v Tigers must have looked like a great pick for Friday night footy when they were doing the draw.
