I think that's bullshit

NFL is a line of scimage most of time

And average 75,000 a game

The game needs f**king atmosphere..that's all
Crowds build crowds

We just don't know how to start

Massive stadiums make it almost impossible

Better scheduling of games, more afternoon games, no Thurs night or Friday 6pm. If the NRL wants to kick start bigger crowds then it needs to sacrifice some of the TV money.

What about all the new suburbs springing up in the region. How have sports teams gone there?
New suburbs have been springing up in campbelltown for 40 years and made no difference. Most of the migrants going there already follow other sports?

The NFL have Thursday night and Monday night games. But they have a larger population to draw on and arguably an even more popular second tier (college) to build from. Newer stadiums will help, Parra will show that. You'd like to think the NRL have cashed in this round of TV money and will use that as a base to now take a bit more control back, to impact crowd numbers positively, which is a significant influence on the perceived image of the game's popularity.

Additionally we don’t just “grow” crowds. Rugby league is not a sport you just decide to go to one day.

If I asked each of you how did you get introduced to it alot would say “I went with my dad and sat on the hill”.

I just don’t think league is something people just “choose” to take up.

I went to a Storm game by myself to have a look.I was hooked and didn`t go to another afl game. a few weeks later I took four of my afl friends and now they are Storm members 20 yrs ago

we got 23,700 in the year 2000 against the Roosters on a freezing sleeting Sunday afternoon in July
they were 3rd , we were 2nd
I was there , it was horrendously cold
turn on ysterdays conditions then , & whateva GIO holds , we would have got

anything else I can help you with ?
It was only, 23,603... piss poor.

You sir are the absolute exception.
I feel like this is how a lot of Melburnians are introduced to the game
They actually hear a lot about the Storm down here, a lot just don't really know much about the game other than it exists (and a lot of them struggle to know the difference between league and union...),
eventually curiosity gets to them and they go check it out

Origin helps a lot too, nearly all my mates down here have watched origin (on tv), but a lot of them have never properly watched a regular season game

Please stop comparing the NFL crowds to rugby league crowds.

325 million people vs 25 million people in the same Country size. Give me a break.

I'll challenge this; Texas college football compared to NRL.

28 million vs 25 million.

University of Texas Longhorns; 100,000 seater stadium, 90,000 average attendance.

Baylor University Bears; 45,000 seater. Routinely filled.

Texas A&M; 100,000

Houston University Cougars; 40,000

Texas Tech Raiders; 60,000

North Texas; 30,000

Rice University; 40,000

Even their smaller schools have 12,000 seaters.

These guys always have sold out games. Texas University got 103,000 in a game when they were no chance of making the playoffs.

The big difference isn't population, it's atmosphere. Go to a College game and even if your team loses the game day experience is worth the price of admission. They have bands, performances, fireworks etc. The NRL could benefit hugely if they worked to create a huge fan experience.

Fair point well made. I won’t challenge the content. From what I understand it’s nearly impossible to get tickets to an nfl game is that right?

I found it depends on the team. Dallas Cowboys; unless they're playing like garbage, it's like Origin tickets scarcity. Cleveland Browns give them away for $10 by the mid point of the season. In fact that's part of why the American sports seem to get huge crowds all season; once teams lose a chance at the finals they just flog tickets at cost pricem

I mean I certainly do, in the same way I enjoy the NBA and the NHL. Every sport in the world wishes they had what the Americans have with their football culture. No other place in the world can get 100,000 people to watch an amateur team play school vs school games.
