2018 Crowd Watch

The NRL's crowd problem can be summed up pretty easily- they can't compete with the competition in the entertainment industry and to most people the experience at the field isn't worth the difference that it costs compared to watching the game at home...

Until there is something about attending a game that you can't get watching it at home and an NRL game can compete with other forms of entertainment value for money wise there'll always be a crowd problem.

It's not going to change soon either, the people in charge of the NRL and most of the clubs have neither the creativity nor the expertise (or connections) to implement any serious change in this regard.

BBL is played over a couple of months in summer during school holidays!

This year bbl clubs will play 7 home games, some nrl clubs only play 10! If it was nrl we’d be saying crowds won’t go because it’s too hot and there’s too many other things to do in Summer, and you’re too far from the action etc etc

Reality is they have taken a pretty dull sport and turned it into a spectator event. Lessons to be learnt.

We can compare with the USA as much as we want. The reality is:>>>>>>
Crowd drops are hardly isolated to the NRL in this country.Have look at A League and union crowds of late, and even the AFL(the crowd goers) last weekend was expecting more at the big G blockbuster(86,000 instead of 95,000)and i know we'd kill for their crowds.
Is it due to people tightening wallets, with big housing loans and the possibility of interest rate rises?
Scheduling especially 6pm is a screwer.Brookvale Oval is a park not a football ground.
Is is due to Eels/Dogs with big fans bases down near the a*se end of the table.?Or are they shat off with ANZ in addition?

At least despite a drop in TV ratings the NRL is doing a lot better than the other codes, with much larger % drops.
So yes TV plays a big part in rl fans deciding whether to go or face crap transport and at times dull non atmospheric stadiums. Some the fumbler really don't have to put up with. All their stadium are all seaters, mostly centralised near fans .
The reality is ,think about it, rugby league has really only 4 decent stadiums: Suncorp/CBS GC/Newcastle/Melbourne AAMI.Apart from the tits who have next to no public parking, who gets the crowds consistently Suncorp,Newcastle and Melbourne in an AFL obsessed state.

If the new Parra and SFS stadium don't; draw crowds we have a problem.Maybe I'm a super optimist ,but I believe Parramatta's new stadium will get 20,000 averages consistently and will also help the Wanderers.

What I have noted of late, away supporters are not travelling in numbers.Of the 19,800 odd at the SFS on Sunday,I'll bet my left one 18,000 were Rooster boosters, and the Dragons were there just to make up the difference.

no
but 3 of the 9 did in 1983 so stop lying , the Sharks 4,014 FFS , I mean that'd embarrass the A League
The A League didn't exist in 1983, Canberra managed to attract an average of 500 extra fans last year compared to 1982. After 35 years their crowds have grown by 500, let that sink in before you lay the boot into other teams.

Ha ha, there's more than that, they just don't show up to games regularly.

Comparing Canberra's situation to Sydney's situation is a fools errand, it's comparing apples and oranges.

More having a go at your fellow Raiders supporter who is calling for 4 Sydney teams to because of crowds. I generally have no problem with canberra fans or their crowds

The game you refer to (88k, not 86k) had all available tickets sold, it didn't reach 95-100k because members didn't turn up.

This is just inflammatory rubbish which distracts from the point you're trying to make.

The afl averaged bigger crowds in 1998 than they do now, super rugby union crowds have pretty much halved in 15 years, the A league average 4500 less now than 10 years ago, the nrl is slightly up on last year and slightly down over the course of a decade.

This is not just a rugby league problem!!!!! This is not a crisis!

In fairness that drop in crowds for the AFL comes due to GWS and Gold Coast adding two extra teams and almost no attendees. They were set up rather well with 16 clubs, had a good footprint. Overzealous expansion is what hurt them.

The A-League booted most of the admin as a result of bad crowds and Union is currently being run by the fat goth chick that killed the Dogs and NZ Netball. Hardly something to be comparing League to.

Yeah let's compare a brand new side that never played on any day except Saturday or Sunday & never at night, to one that's had 24 years without success that now plays on Thursday nights & Fridays at 6pm

Yeah
That's a fair comparison isn't it you fruit loop lol

Hardly inflammatory.St George fans will tell you they prefer Jubilee or WIN any time, and their crowds have shown that to be the case.My eyes don't deceive me the vast majority of fans last Sunday were not wearing red and white. That's not just my view.
There was a far better spread at the ANZAC day match between the clubs,I know a special day.

All I was showing ,that away fans and that includes me do not travel to other venues certainly in Sydney.Unless of course it's a semi /final or G/F.That's the way it is ATM in Sydney.Which is ,was the point of my post.
