Newcastle attracted 20K to a 6pm Friday game
if each clubs marketing dept can't turn 2 , 3 max of their home games into events with what ever incentives they need , then we are in trouble

I still don't think the NZers should be lumped with 1 time slot for all their home games , just because its a hard one for aussies to get to
be inventive , show some ingenuity , work real hard on a couple of home games in rough time slots , get the fans in.
The only reason we got 20k that night was because it was Good Friday. So make every Friday a public holiday and the crowds will roll on. I'm all for it, personally.

It's crazy off the back of a season that saw crowds drop below 15k. Surely logic would dictate that you would red flag every derby and big drawing game and put them in the prime spots? Oh well RL never fails to dissapoint.
Not RL, the NRL. It’s important to put the blame where it lies.

I assume they put the draws together after speaking to the clubs and with those fan surveys at the end of the a year, with an eye on the broadcasters too. From the reaction on here it looks like the fans that complete those surveys don’t overlap much at all with those who use this forum.

Except for the stupid Friday 6pm games I’m quite happy with the draw.

Perhaps you chose not to read my post. I merely indicated it's not locked in because the AFL Draw isn't out. Hell, Round 1 hasn't even leaked yet as it normally would a week out from the fixture release.

I agree that it's likely but I think we should cross that bridge when we come to it, it's not going to change the NRL Draw.

Your comment shows how little you are aware of the AFL media cycle; as mentioned previously today was the final day of the AFL Trade Period. The AFL Round 1 'Leak' always occurs following the end of trade period, it's almost like clockwork that as soon as the media starts to move away from the end of the trade period the AFL 'leaks' Round 1 and other marquee fixtures slowly over the space of a week before they announce their draw. The way the AFL keeps themselves in the headlines is so much more effective than the NRL.

Want to look at the Herald Sun & The Age websites and see how much media attention the NRL Fixture release got in Melbourne today?? Or how much SEN (Melbourne Sport's radio) spent talking about it today? Absolutely none! Because they were focused on the end of the AFL Trade Period.

I understand you don't see this as an issue because it's not released yet, but by not having the foresight to predict something that has a 99% chance of happening that will massively negatively impact one of the biggest 'Marquee' matches in a market where fans are actually going to games and has the ability to grow faster than most other clubs in the NRL.

If we look at the first two Storm home games

R2- Sat Night @ 7:30pm Vs. West Tigers (week before the AFL starts)
R3- Thurs Night @ 7:50pm Vs. Cowboys (same night as a predicted massive AFL game in the same precinct)

The Storm have already missed the opportunity to celebrate Billy Slater's 300th at home (because Storm will be forced to play it Round 1), unless he has a 'nagging injury' that will cause him to miss R1 and then play 300 at home.

But with that set up the Storm will probably get 15k to the Tigers game and 12k to the Cowboys game. If they played the Cowboys the week before they could promote it as a Grand Final rematch and use the Suncorp 'Testimonal' match as a way to promote the first home game-- Cowboys with Thurston could draw 20k+ on that same Saturday night-- with the Tigers probably still getting 10-12k on the following Thursday (if they had to use that horrible time) or instead play the game at 5:30pm Saturday (effectively either before or after an MCG Round 1 blockbuster) and get extra supporters who are also going to the AFL.

It's the lack of foresight by the NRL in this expansion market that is disappointing.

So is the NRLs strategy that instead of actually doing something about Sydney's terrible crowds, they decide to serve out hot thursday trash to Brisbane to drag their numbers down to be as shit as the rest to make it less obvious to everyone? It's almost impressive how the NRL continues to find ways to make themselves look worse and worse and worse.

Those clubs that got less than 3 FTA games have a right to be ropeable as well. f**k Canberra, who cares.

They don’t give a flying rats what the fans think, they can’t see past the tv dollars. At least if they were honest about it, you could grudgingly respect their decisions but all the fans get is the usual trumpeting of how good it’s going to be and a complete refusal to acknowledge any contrary view.

This draw shows the TV money has had less influence than it has for a very long time.

My initial glance says even though nrl have taken over the fixtures it is still all about tv. Sad really.

I say it every year, once again Nein (the self-titled Home of Rugby League - does anyone believe this besides their PR dept?) could have done an hour long show in prime time going through the draw club by club, highlighting the good and bad bits.

Typically, Rupert’s minions kept the reporting to a minimum (sick of hearing Paul White gush on about the Broncos finally getting some Sunday games but that was the only story I saw). I presume there was a media conference with the Turd waffling on but I only saw footage of him being interviewed outside NRL Central.

As others have said, the fumblers do it so much better keeping their game in the news. The NRL are rank amateurs, barely more than a rabble.

After all our hopes for the ARLC since 2012...Sigh.

That was Good Friday...

Got 17,000 the week before against the Dogs in the same timeslot. Interestingly enough it was the 4th highest crowd total for the year, behind the Good Friday Clash, Old Boys day against the Sharks, and the Mining game against the Tigers where a bunch of free tickets were given away.

So really it was the biggest crowd that wasnt a promotional game or a public holiday.

I guess the nrl see that of most Teams, Newcastle's supporter base has the best chance of turning up to a Friday 6.30pm game, just sucks for people further up the valley or up the coast, and opposition fans.

Mind you, only 3 of 8 scheduled are at home, much like this year. So its strange we get some many away games in that time slot.

Afl crowds on Thursdays would be above their season averages. Why do they draw on a thursday and ours dont?
How do you even know we'd rate low? We get one free to air game a year, usually against the equally shit Tigers.

Ch 9 has been clueless for years.

Will they even have enough $$$$ to enter the bidding for the rights next time round or will News pick them up for a bargain due to the competition continually shooting themselves in the foot and going bust?

Ray Warren is still calling ffs.

Turn it off people!

The PDF link to the whole draw on the NRL's website has it very clearly printed as the Dragons v Roosters game on ANZAC Day as a 4.10 pm kick-off, with the Storm v Warriors game being at 7.00pm.

But if you go into the nrl site and click on the draw it still is saying Dragons vs Roosters at 7 pm, I know it’s wrong but that’s what is says.

Rnd 8: Wed 25 Apr 2018, 7:00pm, Allianz Stadium
