While I think new identities are great for the long term success of Womens RL, one of the big reasons for the success of the AFL Womens game is that the 8 clubs involved have kept the exact same names, logos and jerseys as their male counterparts. There is a ready made support base to tap into and if we change too much then we run the risk of not having the instant success the AFL enjoyed in their inaugural season.
The initial success of the AFLW's all down to free entry to games and a massive push from the media, it hasn't got anything to do with sharing the brand with the men, and long term sharing the club and branding with the men will only be a negative, they're all doomed to be the 'just the womens' team', and as soon as the clubs hits hard times financially it'll be the womens' team that's funding gets cut...
The demise of the reserve grade competition compared to how big it was in the 90's can be put down to the fact that Raiders supporters don't care about the Mount Prichard Mounties, Manly supporters wouldn't give a hoot about the Blacktown workers and Eels with Wentworthville etc.
Firstly, though reserves was bigger in the 90's then it is now you're acting as if it was a big deal, it really wasn't.
Secondly the "demise" of reserve grade was due to a rule change or whatever that meant that their games finished an hour or more before the kick off of first grade and people weren't bothered to come three hours before the kick off of first grade with an hour of more in between each game with nothing to do.
And why do you want the Raiders fan base or any other for that matter to support the Mounties? We should be aiming for a system where the Mounties (and the rest of the NSWcup and QLDcup) are as accessible as the NRL clubs so that it becomes more feasible to become a fan of those clubs, and the Mounties can really start to build their own fan base.
I love this logo and would like to see it be used but they need to still be called the raiders.
Why?
Independent identities is a step in the right direction not only for the legitimacy of the womens' teams as teams worth watching in their own right, but is also a good move for the clubs business and merchandise sales wise.
Shackling the women to the men should be avoided as much as possible (if I had my way new independent clubs would exclusively be part of the new womens' NRL, but I can understand why they haven't gone that route with start up costs and the such), they need to be treated as a big event in their own right, not simply as an opener to the mens' team, not dare I say it as a token gesture, a cheap publicity magnet or a sideshow.
All the male mascots can be changed to female characters such as a female holding the lightning bolt for the storm etc. You might say that a rooster is an adult male chicken but in the womens AFL, the logo Brisbane Lions use is still a male Lion with a mane. The only one that might need changing name-wise is the Cowboys to Cowgirls. But at this stage there are only 5 or 6 licences up for grabs from the NRL.
That'd be cause they haven't got an independent brand, their logo is the same as the mens' logo, the same is true of all the AFLW clubs...
