I'm not really blaming the government. The courts said they could. If it's lawful for one group to gather together in a mass gathering then it's lawful for all groups.

Really that just ignores what kind of arguments were and can be made. Precedent isn't a blanket decision over a broad set of circumstances. It's a decision on points of law under a certain set of circumstances.

I dare say there is a huge difference between an assembly of a political nature, and a footy game as far as how the state can regulate them.

So as long as we all hold BLM signs we should be sweet?

If that was the purpose of the gathering and it was incidental that an NRL match was being held at the same venue, then possibly.

You'd have to read the decision, and understand how that applies to know for sure though.

Allowing the protests on the weekend tells us the government is ok with large crowds. Bring on the footy crowds!

I'm not sure they "allowed it".

I think it was more a case of going with the flow because to stop it would have required a certain amount of physical resistance which may have incited a level of violent response from the protesters and these protesters were very passionate about their belief and sympathy for black lives.

After seeing what happened in America, it was probabaly a fair decision not to offer physical resistance.

*after complaining about lack of social distancing in schools
And since it has apparently been safe to go back (which we did a month ago) I haven’t complained. Now it seems to be safe for political activists it must also be safe for footy fans.

How do you know it was safe? What if there’s a sudden spike on the weekend filtering out of activists?
As I said previously it’s a good test case, but the nature of the beast doesn’t mean because none of the protesters died on Saturday, we can all rush back to the football on Sunday. It’s a step, it may even be the final step but the cake hasn’t been baked yet.

Perfect metaphor

Barilaro seems to think that if it’s good enough for people to gather for a protest, then it’s good enough for the footy.

“But Barilaro believes it wouldn’t make sense preventing supporters attending NRL matches now when 20,000 protesters took part in the Black Lives Matter rally with minimal social distancing rules in Sydney on Saturday.

“In my mind, it’s now clear we need some consistency with what is being approved,” Barilaro told the The Daily Telegraph”.

Time will tell in about 10 days if there is a spike in infections. Thankfully community transmissions in AU have been bugger all, with all of our numbers coming from quarantined arrivals.

Worrying thing, they still don't know the effects of asymptomatic transmission.

Hope there isn't, But if there is cv19 infections and deaths come from people who were at these protests, bank your bottom dollar there will be some kind suing going on towards the gov. Talk about full circle

There have been eight new coronavirus cases in Victoria including one in a staff member at an aged care facility, one in a toddler and another from the Black Lives Matter protest.

On Thursday, the state’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton gave a press conference and confirmed the new cases, saying it “was not over” for Victoria yet.

“The lesson here is it’s not over for Victoria and it’s not over for Australia in terms of ongoing cases being detected,” he said.

A man aged in his 30s who attended Saturday’s Black Lives Matter protest tested positive for the virus and developed symptoms after he left.

“They developed symptoms after attending, within 24 hours,” Sutton said.

“It is unlikely it was acquired from the protest.”

Sutton said they were wearing a mask during the protest, but were potentially infectious.

“Masks do not completely protect those around you,” he said.

“The lesson about warning people not to attend applies.

“The restrictions are there for a reason and I hope anyone who attended and develops symptoms really need to isolate themselves and get tested.”

The toddler who tested positive was at Professor Lyn Corcoran Early Learning Centre in Parkville.

All staff and children will be tested.

Bupa Aged Care in Clayton has gone into lockdown after the staff member tested positive, but they were not symptomatic when working.

There is also one new case at the Rydges hotel in the CBD, bringing the total of the outbreak to 15.

Two other cases are other investigation and two are from hotel quarantine.
