I think the thing about experience for most of us crying out about it is really getting the right mix of experienced and young players alike and not just building a team of old guys. Our player turnover has been very poor the last few years but we're entering a new phase now.

Ivan has already brought in some good recruits for this season and has tried to help fix our attack by bringing Barrett back to the club. Obviously an outside back would have been nice to bring in also but there wasn't really any good options out there anyway. I think we're on the right track but Ivan will be under a lot of pressure this year.

Gould is gone now and whether it was the right or wrong thing to do will become more apparent over time, one thing's for sure though he always built up our juniors and seemed to like giving them massive contracts on big money before they ever really deserved it, with him gone I'd assume it would be easier to hold onto players at the right value.

The good thing I like is 24 players off contract over the next season. No reason we can’t get an experienced outside back to take over Aekins or McGrady’s spot for example.

As we did with the 3 signings this year. Add another 3-4 like that and it builds that up

I think how much money we have to spend will also depend on how much we are paying the salaries of RCG and Waqa Blake and for how long. Hopefully we are not tipping in beyond this season.

Penrith has won it's 2 premerships on the back of local juniors and a couple of solid journey men.

Dragons, Titians, Warriors have some of the most experienced players. I'll take youth each and every time for experience in the teams just mentioned.

Youth brings energy, fearlessness, can do attitude which sometimes can fade with age.

You have to have a good mix. That 2003 team had a decent mix especially where it counted. Gower was highly experienced as were Priddis and Girdler. Big T was quite seasoned by then, Sattler and Lang were hardened veterans. Even Preston Campbell was no rookie by then either.

That becomes a double edge sword, a guy like Stephen Crichton or Brian To'o who we'd want to keep, might just look elsewhere when they show some consistent form, as other clubs will want to swoop in, instead of us locking up for a longer term, like Gould had been doing, so there's no real good way to go about it, competition between roster spots can be tight, but if you are approached to play elsewhere for a better longer contract ....well

As the article points out, young teams don’t win premierships. We need to find a better way, that could include a range of things. One just might be holding on to players for longer.
Acticles facts are too vague, just coz merrin and issac luke are in the dragons team, doesn't nessesarely mean they will make finals, maybe a graph with finals contenders showing experience could gague a better showing of experience vs clubs who progress to make final 4 would better,
But again depends on key injuries guys like Thurston or Hodgson made a huge impact on their teams not making a finals run to the GFs, way too many factors that prove that articles historical mathematics are flawed, but in saying all this, penrith being the youngest squad getting the underdog label is better than being the favourites.
Look at our squad at the start of last year, we had experience in nearly all positions, even with peachey, CHN and merrin moving on the previous season, yet as soon as we dropped a lot of guys and new blood came in, 7 in a row, and a blistering newcastle blow out to end the season, but we finished 10th, luke i said each club has reasons for not making the GF, experience in NRL games isn't a major factor

Sivo is a good example of what you can loose if you don’t give players a chance.

We seem to have a hard time developing players that the team Needs at the right time.

The storm do it best, they obviously identified they needed a fullback to cover Slater and had 3 of the best young players ready to go for it, Smith’s replacements are ready.
Chambers was dropped to give Olam and Scott a place, the list goes on, they just seem to get it right most of the time.

Experience and time together in the spine is very important but I think fire power and speed in the backs is also necessary.

Mitchell and Manu were rookies for the last 2 years but the firepower they add to the team can’t be denied.

It doesn’t say that the most experienced team will make the finals, it just says typically you need a threshold of experience to win the premiership. Ie. We’re very likely to be in a rebuilding phase again.

I get that, i was saying they should write the same thing but for all the teams that made finals, not just experience vs GF only, thats a better gauge, manly last year with a heap of in experience still made the finals, i picked them for the spoon

Yeah but notice they were still no chance of winning the premiership.

Who manly? they did pretty good to get that far, it was broncos and eels that were woeful, the top4 last year, anyone of them could have won the GF, canberra were unlucky, storm were unlucky the week b4, basically refs decided those games, and bad rules, not experience

I feel nauseous whenever I read “rebuilding phase”. It’s our perpetual state

I agree, but its better than fighting for the spoon, Ivan is good at rebuilding, it had to happen once he was appointed, its a given, now its time to see the fruits of the labour

Manly were a good chance until they lost Turbo.
He can win any game on any day.
I think the way their season unfolded last year, and Canberra’s is how we will win our next premiership, like our last one.
We won’t be favourites but will out perform and surprise everyone on the back of some crazy new talent.

Exactly. This is the problem, we’re almost always turning to younger talent. Now sometimes that younger talent will be the better option, but if it’s always the better option we’re going to have problems competing for a title.

We did recruit some reasonably experienced players this off season, so hopefully the club recognised the problem.
