I’m a Catholic. Nowhere in the bible does it state homosexuality is forbidden. In places where it is mentioned, such as Leviticus, it is specific to a certain group of people, in particular Hebrew priests - although the code of Leviticus is superseded by the commandment to follow Jesus.

In the New Testament, the one brief mention is theorised by many scholars as a strike against the then-common practice of adult men having sex with young boys. It never specifically mentions that all same-sex relationships are bad - love thy neighbour is a much more common theme, and there are no qualifications to that command.

Now of course the church has historically been at the forefront of the persecution of same sex attracted people, and it is to their great shame. In my opinion it is based on at best a misinterpretation of the original sacred texts, and at worst a wilful misreading to codify the prejudice of early senior members of the clergy. It’s abhorrent, but to the current Pope’s credit, they are righting some of the wrongs of the past by saying that we should welcome and live all people regardless of their orientation, and that simply being same sex attracted is not a sin. There’s still progress that needs to be made, but I have hope.

To be a Christian is to believe that the Pope is God’s messenger. As he has said that we should love and welcome everyone regardless of sexual orientation, I’m afraid hiding behind religious beliefs doesn’t wash with me. To do so is to cling on to the old beliefs that even the church has moved on from.

Oh and one final thing - the church has always banned sex outside marriage - it’s one of the 10 commandments. If any of the Manly 7 have ever had a one night stand, they’ve committed a far graver sin in the eyes of God than wearing a jersey with a few rainbow stripes.

They’re hypocrites, cowards, and they deserve all the condemnation they’re going to receive. They’re using religion to cover for homophobia and I’m f**king sick of it.

As a catholic you surely missed the mark I am atheist but went to a cathotlc school and I know for a fact Bible outlaws homosexuality. 1 Romans 27, 1 Timothy 1:10 to name a few. Even as an atheist I now what quoted in Leviticus was a covenant for that period and don't apply today. I have so much respect for these men willing to miss such a crucial game in the season for their beliefs. If there was a an Islamic symbols of Jerseys I will have no issues for a gay person not wanting to wear it.

Stop trying to use a false equivalency as an argument to support bigotry.

No difference you cannot force someone to promote something they are against . Isn't a gay person not wearing Islamic symbols Islamophobia. There is a difference between hating someone and not supporting their views.

This is embarrassing. The players need to be told to f**k off to Union or something. They act like They're being told to get involved in homosexual activity. The NRL and it's clubs ABSOLUTELY needs to show that it is inclusive.

For me, all the jersey is saying is "If you're gay, you are also welcome to enjoy the footy along with everyone else.". That's what it's all about, all of us coming together. It's not hard to see that the footy wouldn't have felt very welcoming for a gay man until recently (and it probably still isn't). We need to turn that around. Everyone should be able to go to the footy. If you're someone who doesn't want certain types of people watching the footy, you're a f**kwit.

Exactly. Inclusivity isn't a f**king belief, it's a right. Equality is a right. Pride round is not a 'gay agenda' as someone said, it's a movement to achieve equality.

I saw a great post on Twitter, where it said there would be a great irony if Manly go on to lose on the weekend, and the decision of these 7 led directly to a savage beating by 17 Cocks.

All these different jerseys give me the shits! Manly seem to be one of the worst in the NRL with it. Their composite materials jersey, an indigenous jersey, an Anzac jersey, their community jersey, their retro jersey, now their pride jersey. Wear the same jersey for every match, and an away strip when it’s required! Maybe wear a one-off per season, but 6 themed jerseys? Its no surprise that the manly uniform isn’t as identifiable as the saints or roosters or bulldogs or Rabbitohs, because it’s different every year and every week! It’s a joke and the NRL are incompetent for allowing it.

In saying all that, the pride jersey is the best looking one of a bad sea eagles lot. The rainbow trim works well. Although not a pride jersey, the rainbow jersey in cycling is one of the most prestigious in the sport - world champion. But still, I’m over all these themes.

Reason why 4 Pines and Pointsbet is accepted then as drinking alcohol is permissible (Jesus drank wine), as long your not drunk, also gambling isn't stated anywhere but Christians advised don't let love of money drive you so both alcohol and gambling are allowed to a certain extent as long not abused. It shapes as an embarrassing moment at 4 Pines Park on Thursday with Sea Eagles club great Ian Roberts hoping to attend and watch the players run out wearing the jersey.

Roberts, in 1995, became the first rugby league player to come out as openly gay, and on Monday threw his support behind Manly’s move.

“I try to see it from all perspectives but this breaks my heart,” Roberts said.

“It’s sad and uncomfortable. As an older gay man, this isn’t unfamiliar. I did wonder whether there would be any religious push back. That’s why I think the NRL have never had a Pride round.”

“I can promise you every young kid on the northern beaches who is dealing with their sexuality would have heard about this.”

ARLC chairman Peter V’landys said players were within their rights not to play.

“Rugby league is the greatest game for all,” he told 2GB.

“It’s inclusive. But at the same time you have to respect people’s religious beliefs and cultural beliefs.

“Those players are taking a stand and they’ve got every right to — they’ve got freedoms to do so.”

Former Prime Minister Bill Shorten said the debacle was a “great shame” and should not have reached this point.

“Politicians should stay out of sport so I will adhere to that advice. It’s a shame it got to this” he said.

“On one hand, you will have a lot of young gay people saying do we have to validate our existence again? On the other hand, these players strongly feel their view and their supporters miss out.

This is where the misunderstanding lies. The pride jersey promotes inclusion, not a minority’s life choice. Expecting a gay person to wear an Islamic symbol representative of a body that not only wants them excluded but also punished is waaaaay totally different.
