Once again for those with comprehension difficulties

nrl 2023-2027 $402 of which around $370-375mill is cash
afl 2023-2024 $476mill of which around $450mill will be cash
2025-2031 $643mill of which around $571mill is cash

Between 2023-2027 when our deal finishes the cash difference is in the region of $750million cash more to AFL. Great work pistol Pete!

even if you take out telstra and add in radio plus add in difference in naming rights deals afl still hits over $700mill cash difference. staggeringly bad deals of an unprecedented level by our illustrious leader.

But you’ve added digital for afl and ignored the nrl digital revenue

lmao

Youve got radio rights in yours. The AFls arent included - and they were announced a week later.

The AFL has Telstras digital rights including the ownership and operation of the AFL web network because they were actually sold in the same deal that was announced all at the same time. NRL digital rights werent sold to anyone, The NRL retains them in house. We've been over this. Go ahead and add them to your overall broadcast revenues, but you cant add them to any media rights sale revenue.

The NRL sold Telstra its naming rights with some contra services thrown in separately.

Yet the NRL themselves say they report in cash, The predicted revenue has gone up enough to back up those comments.

$400m add 20% of whatever is still 'Over' $400m that the actual announcement said
haha nrl has never, and I repeat NEVER announced a cash only media deal. It’s great spin but totally untrue lol

last nrl tv deal was announced as $385mill of which it turned out around $24mil a year was contra. We know nine have upped contra $5mill. I suspect a chunk of the sky deal is contra Given how it was announced, contra is likely to be around the $30-32mill mark for nrl in this next 5 year deal.

Before Vlandys hid it away the nrl digital had a revenue of $26mill. Of course there are significant costs and investments related to generating that revenue which afl doesn’t carry in its telstra deal, telstra carry those.

but let’s say for arguments sake we add everything in at a basic revenue level

Afl $653mill all media
nrl $428 all media

$225mill a year fcking difference, plus another $9mill a year on top naming rights difference. we got so screwed.

it doesn’t get any better sadly for us.
So we're getting about two-thirds of what they're getting. 😔

Our game is f**ked.

I doubt anyone thinks that, at least in the short to medium term. Question is can fox afford to increase their $240mill for nrl in 2028?

paying an estimated $390mill for afl can’t leave much fat on the bone to up nrls payment unless there is a massive hike in subscribers or fees.
If that turns out to be the case then looks like Fox lose the NRL at the next rights deal. Good luck paying those AFL rights when more than half their subscribers flee en masse to a competitor.

No they didnt. This is about what I expect from someone who doesnt understand the terms of the deal the AFL signed in 1997 for Docklands.

Docklands was a BOOT project - Build. Own. Operate. Transfer. The AFL bought the land outright. the AFL then literally had a rent to own agreement for the stadium itself - which is why rent was so high there for years. In 2025 under the deal, the AFL would get the stadium for $30.

The stadiums owners were being reportedly trying to sell to the League from 2015, and the League ended up basically buying the stadium for the remaining debt the owners had in November 2016..

Most AFL clubs arent swimming in debt at all.

Yes because Western Sydney is the whole damn country. the AFL runs a national sport. Not just a pocket in Sydney.
To be fair the Lions and Suns only still exist thanks to years of bailouts from the AFL. Saying that the AFL does have the extra cash to prop up these expansion basket cases.

Unfortunately with them having the cricket would mean I'd keep kayo

BROADCAST BUNGLE

There is a view the AFL destroyed the NRL in TV rights broadcasting negotiations.

The AFL recently announced a seven-year, $4.5 billion deal between 2025-31, but V’landys scoffed at suggestions the NRL undervalued their product with Fox and Channel 9.

“It’s nonsense, the time periods (of the AFL and NRL broadcasting deals) are different for a start,” he said.

“The majority of the money they (the AFL) are getting is between 2027-31 ... we haven’t done a deal for those years yet, so how can people compare something when there is nothing to compare at the moment?

“People don’t understand that the AFL took a bigger cut than what we did during Covid from a broadcasting perspective.

“When the time is right, we will be looking at increasing our broadcast value.

“The AFL don’t do things better than us. We will beat them.”

haha really Pete? Really? I know he’s trying to save his lucrative side job but does he think we are all stupid? Yeh they took a bigger covid cut, then got it all it back in 23/24.

no Pete they’ve got 5 years of significantly more funding than us and yes we have a deal in 2027 (does he know when our deal runs to even?)

when the time is right? Hahah what? When? Why we wasting time Pete?

yeh we’ll get more than their $590 odd million? not whilst you’re in charge matey.

And yet the NRL dont just report in cash. And they do report Contra. Its almost like people dont read the reports.

Since the profit share with the players?

because

The NRL have announced that revenue from the game's three broadcast partners - Nine, Fox Sports and Sky NZ - will total more than $400m per annum for five years from 2023 until 2027.

Nine have confirmed that their share of the deal is valued at more than $600m, including a contra component, which will be used to promote the game and support targeted grassroots initiatives.

Given there is a Revenue share with the players, Putting the $50m or so Contra in as revenue makes zero sense. Unless of course you can pay players with Channel 9 ad space

Contra is included in revenue, then removed as a cost in The account reporting lol
the “revenue” share with players is based on surplus made not on total revenue. The cap is set then the deal is any surplus nrl makes players get a cut of As a bonus.

did you miss the bit where I told you no nrl (or afl or any other sport) tv deal has EVER been announced as a cash only component? damn it’s hard to clutch them straws isn’t it? Lol

It is what it comes down too, Cash is king
Until the afl are honest and tell us how much each network is paying them the the only way we can judge is look at the afl bottom line and whether funding to clubs and players not only goes back to pre covid levels, but actually surpasses them like the nrl does

the fact that they are still recovering from covid shows their cash revenues are still soft

right now financially the afl is around 3 to 5 years behind the nrl, and to get into the same position financially as the nrl is right now

where the governing body makes profits and all clubs make profits and the salary cap and club funding are at record levels

Can anyone confirm when the current NRL TV deal expires?
