NRL digital rights werent sold to anyone, The NRL retains them in house. We've been over this. Go ahead and add them to your overall broadcast revenues, but you cant add them to any media rights sale revenue.

I doubt anyone thinks that, at least in the short to medium term. Question is can fox afford to increase their $240mill for nrl in 2028?

paying an estimated $390mill for afl can’t leave much fat on the bone to up nrls payment unless there is a massive hike in subscribers or fees.

If that turns out to be the case then looks like Fox lose the NRL at the next rights deal. Good luck paying those AFL rights when more than half their subscribers flee en masse to a competitor.

No they didnt. This is about what I expect from someone who doesnt understand the terms of the deal the AFL signed in 1997 for Docklands.

Docklands was a BOOT project - Build. Own. Operate. Transfer. The AFL bought the land outright. the AFL then literally had a rent to own agreement for the stadium itself - which is why rent was so high there for years. In 2025 under the deal, the AFL would get the stadium for $30.

The stadiums owners were being reportedly trying to sell to the League from 2015, and the League ended up basically buying the stadium for the remaining debt the owners had in November 2016..



Most AFL clubs arent swimming in debt at all.



Yes because Western Sydney is the whole damn country. the AFL runs a national sport. Not just a pocket in Sydney.

To be fair the Lions and Suns only still exist thanks to years of bailouts from the AFL. Saying that the AFL does have the extra cash to prop up these expansion basket cases.

The AFL recently announced a seven-year, $4.5 billion deal between 2025-31, but V’landys scoffed at suggestions the NRL undervalued their product with Fox and Channel 9.

“It’s nonsense, the time periods (of the AFL and NRL broadcasting deals) are different for a start,” he said.

“The majority of the money they (the AFL) are getting is between 2027-31 ... we haven’t done a deal for those years yet, so how can people compare something when there is nothing to compare at the moment?

“People don’t understand that the AFL took a bigger cut than what we did during Covid from a broadcasting perspective.

the “revenue” share with players is based on surplus made not on total revenue. The cap is set then the deal is any surplus nrl makes players get a cut of As a bonus.

Until the afl are honest and tell us how much each network is paying them the the only way we can judge is look at the afl bottom line and whether funding to clubs and players not only goes back to pre covid levels, but actually surpasses them like the nrl does

the fact that they are still recovering from covid shows their cash revenues are still soft

right now financially the afl is around 3 to 5 years behind the nrl, and to get into the same position financially as the nrl is right now

where the governing body makes profits and all clubs make profits and the salary cap and club funding are at record levels
