I have no idea who's right on this, the only thing I will say is the constant positive media from news ltd. re. PV has always made me suspicious of what's going on behind the scenes. It's almost like he is their man the way they carry on.
This could be explained as simply as, he is the head of NSW racing so has more protection then the usual because Fox don't want to risk two golden gooses in one go. Or you can go the other route and say he is a news stooge. The truth no doubt lay somewhere in the middle.

But that can't be right. If fox were paying that much before, the last deal would have been over $2bil. You know, cause of nine paying $925mil...

C'mon old mate I just want to see if you can admit you were wrong.
Re what the 18-22 (before covid reduction happened) payment split ended up being is anyones guess. The media had smith signing up nine for $925mill. Then after smith was sacked the media had fox agreeing to pay nine directly for Saturday night and simucast And telstra paying fox for simucast streaming. If the deal got totally renogtiated after that who knows?

all we know for sure was it was $1.8billion plus around $100million skynz. How that pie ended up getting sliced No one knows.

this deal is worth $2billion, a $100million increase in which at least $50mill of it is nine contra. For that nine got three more games and another brisbane team, fox got 12 more games and the team they wanted to not challenge their own club, they got nrl digital partially closed down, they got streaming on telstra closed down and the fans lost mid season I ternationrl so nine could have origin back on a weds night.

I’m struggling to see how this deal isn’t ten times worse than the previous two deals since the arlc became independent?( Sky nz deal aside which we’d better hope the increase is mostly cash! )

If the previous deal was $400m and was bumped down to $380m, prior to expansion, then that's a reduction of 5%. That's not too bad considering ratings were down and COVID-19 disrupted the economy.

A-League went from $51m to $40m, which is a 22% reduction and are now stuck on a third-rate streaming service that few people are interested in buying.
That’s why you dont rush into a deal At the beginning of a pandemic! There was no need at all to sign up to fox the 23-27 deal that early, and certainly if it was going to cost the game $100million Plus the covid reduction in 20&21.

Very bad business by Vlandys. I guess that’s what happens if you domt engage specialists to negotiate your media deal and you get a horse racing bloke whose in bed with news ltd to lead it!

He won't answer your question .
Lol I wonder why
going on the commentary last week on the next deal it looks like the 18-22 deal was renogtiated after smith was sacked with fox picking up Saturday and simucast, and the totals for each party adjusted. Not sure what that has to do with the 23-27 deal though?

interesting how everyone is ignoring the fact Vlandys signed a deal with news ltd for $100MILLiON less than the last deal. Or why he signed a deal with nine for zero extra cash despite expansion?

Seriously people no comments on such a terrible Australian part of the deal?

It sucks that we're with Foxtel until 2027, but there weren't any other bidders willing to pay $240m a year.

In an ideal world we would have ESPN putting in a $200m per annum bid for the global broadcast rights to all games. ESPN is the most widely distributed sports channel in Australia. You can get ESPN 1 and 2 on Fetch TV for $6 a month through their Vibe Package. The picture quality on my Fetch Mighty is just as good as Foxtel iQ3 and far superior to Kayo. If our game had any vision it would look at hiring a production team to film the games and sell the content to some one like ESPN. Being stuck on Foxtel/Kayo limits who can see it.

23 onwards, whilst Vlandys agreed to a hundred million dollar reduction from fox, afl managed to get fox to agree to a slight increase in their deal. Go figure.
23 onwards what ?
The AFL managed to get their parking validated & a subway voucher included on the day they signed.

bury your heads all you like but what it looks Like from 2023 is:

nine is paying $130mill ($15mill of which is contra)
sky nz is paying $32.8mill
fox is paying $240mill

Vlandys signed a deal with fox in 2020 for 2023-2027 which was $100mill less than the fox deal signed for 18-22.
(again thanks baselinepanther for bringing this terrible decision by Vlandys to light)

the $100mill they are paying for expansion only brings them back up to the same as the last deal.

At least $50mill of the $100 mill overall increase is contra not cash.

best case scenario we are now facing is that expansion is going to cost the nrl $75million whilst the new tv deal,is only bringing in at most $50million

skynz part of the deal aside the rest is a very poor outcome for the game. Great job Vlandys!
the only one burying their heads is you
up your arse

Vlandys signed that deal because of covid & thats the end of the discussion. This oh he rushed it is your opinion & you are a biased AFL loving anti RL PVL hater ,
so your opinion is treated with the contempt & disdain it deserves.

Your babbling now- throwing figures around that have no meaning Old deal 1.8billion over five years= thats $360m yearly- made up from Nine Fox Telstra
New deal over $400m yearly. It a bald face lie that the new deal is lower than the old. The NRL has increased by $40m/65m at the least- Fox contribution is UP not down.

we ended up dropping just 60. mill from the original signed amount for 2018-22
20 mill in each of the years 20-21 & 22

the AFL has taken a hit from STV to the tune of 30 million pa for those same years ( 90 mill in total), both codes having their original amounts re-set from 2023
The NRL for 5 years (240 mill) , the AFL for 2 (220 mill)

looks like the NRL did waaaaaaayyyyyyy better 😎

the NRL will have averaged 234 mill a year over 10 years from 2018-27 for its STV payments
the AFL 208 mill a year for the 8 years from 2017-24

the NRL may add another team towards the end of this new deal bumping their figure there up even further.

All this debate is really nonsense until such time as we can compare with AFL’s next deal because at the moment we are talking about two different timeframes - our deal is based on post-COVID and post re-negotiated deal, their deal is still framed around COVID and their re-negotiated deal. We’re not comparing like for like.

Both codes made a mistake by renegotiating whilst during COVID and in a position of weakness. That’s pretty clear.

Our deal on the surface doesn’t look like a great one. Yes we have got a small prcantage increase but we have given far too much away and gained far too little.

Notwithstanding, if AFL don’t get an increase from 24 onwards, then perhaps that is just a reflection of Australian media rights reaching its apex, rather than anything to do with our negotiating tactics. We’ll see though

they got 1.909 billion in those 5 years
some 177 million less then their contract
