In reality, so what? Look at many NRL teams, very few have the majority of its first squads comprising "local juniors". If that is going to be your criteria then you better start shutting down around 60%+ of the current NRL clubs then

I know it is a ridiculous notion. We might have give back Papalii, Tapine and a fair few others in that case

Vlandys has made mistakes

he’s admitted that was one of them (indirectly)

but the guy gets things done

he managed to add the dolphins during the covid crisis and when a majority of clubs were against expansion (remember the 10 million they paid to get their own report)

go back through every other nrl boss and who actually did expand ?

I love foxtels coverage of the nrl but if it means watching all games on nine to get better value so be it

and on the previous post above of the above the afl could’ve added tasmania and Perth 3 and they probably would have the same result

The ratings they get in nsw and qld are not the reason for their large tv deals. The ratings in nsw and qld are awful

Better value with all games on Nine? ROFLMAO 😂

Nine don't even like covering its production costs to cover 3 games as it is, or did you just forget about the tanty they threw during COVID wanting to pay less than what they were contractually obligated to? Sorry but Nine won't be upping its financial commitment in the short nor medium terms for NRL TV rights.

Arthurson and Quayle created the perfect conditions for Super League.

1. They discriminated against the Broncos through their biased support of Sydney clubs.
2. They gave the PTV rights to Packer for free.
3. They brought four teams into the competition in 1995 and made them cover travel and accommodation expenses for all visiting clubs across ARL and Reserve Grade.
4. They doubled down on their biased support of Sydney RL clubs in 95 and 96. It was a disaster for the game outside of NSW.

Nice revisionist history. Thanks Mr Ribot for your opinion 😂

Nine just offered 500 million for all the afl rights

that’s one hundred million more then we currently get

they Want to grow stan. Getting all the nrl rights would do that

of course if they offered that for all the rights foxtel has to pay more

that competition gets the nrl a record deal

Because where are the Victorian talent a new club was suppose to bring in? What is the point of going to these expansion areas if it isn't to bring in new players?

Sydney clubs are expanding into regional areas too.

Sharks have money now, Are in the process of taking over a club in Port Macquarie.
That will go with the Home game they have sent up there.

Group 3 where they play, Has 2200 players. The Sharks have 4700 So you are adding 1/3 extra to that
Population wise you are adding a couple hundred thousand to the supporter base
Not to mention more corporate options. That is investment into RL areas

So the myth that these interstate posters have that Sydney clubs are dragging the chain is getting beyond boring

You have teams like the Roosters who've put a lot of time, money and effort into the central coast and fund teams in multiple competitions for the central coasty in the Andrew Johns Cup, Laurie Daley Cup, and Harold Matthews Cup competitions. The Roosters are not poor by any stretch of the imagination.

Nor are team like Penrith, who've helped fund teams in the CRL, and have a strong financial position and assets. Parramatta nor Canterbury are poor either financially. The Dragons problems are not financial, they have a solid financial base, as do the Wests Tigers - Wests leagues Club at Ashfield is one of the strongest clubs in the state.

Yes you guys Central Coast program is working very well, Certainly helps make up for the lack of juniors in the Bondi area

Storm have the highest rate of players making their debut in the NRL for the club than pretty much most clubs. They might not have many kids playing the game in Vic to pick from but they lead the pack in scouting good young talent from around the country/NZ and turning them into first graders. 25/35 of the first team squad have made their NRL debuts with Storm.

Perth was cut to bring in Melbourne,

There are more NRL players playing today from WA then from Victoria. Where would the game be if Perth stayed instead?
WA has always been a stronger RL state than Vic. WA has held that strongest RL state title outside of the heartlands for 75 years. The fact there is no top tier club here remains a travesty and one of the dumbest decisions the game has made.

News Ltd made the decision to cut the Reds, along with the Rams. Perth was cut because they wanted to reduce operating costs, as the NRL took over all costs associated with teams travelling for games directly, and it costs more to fly to Perth than it does (for example) to New Zealand (or it did at the time). The formation of the Storm was a effectively sop by News Ltd to Ribot for his work during Super League.

I had a mate who'd worked for the NSWRL, then the ARL, and stayed on and worked for the NRL after its formation. Most of the decisions were political (e.g. cutting the Crushers and Rams) or financially based (e.g. cutting the Reds). That was because the peace deal meant they had to cull the number of teams from 22 at the end of 1997 to 14 for the 2000 season.

All this history means that the next club should be Perth
What the AFL just did to us is why Perth should be next! Along with the fact its a no brainer. Population, Govt support, investors waiting, fanbase here, jnrs started, stadium ready.
If we dont address the differences between the codes we wont close what is now a revenue gap the size of the grand canyon! Australian metro reach has to become our new priority.

Taking out the Vlandys factor: Australian metro reach, content amount, ad breaks, national profile. They are the differences that NRL is lagging behind AFL in. If we want to close that massive gap then that is where we need to concentrate. NZ should be the bit that puts us ahead after we are level with AFL in Australian tv deals!
NZ tv isnt going to up its $32.4mill to cover a $200mill plus gap on the basis of one more NZ team being added, that Australian TV dont want!

Not really 25 years in the comp and no locals in the squad, Is a success?
Coming from an extremely low base though.

When I first came to Melbourne rugby league results were not even printed in newspapers or mentioned on their "World" of sport shows. Today everyone knows the Storm you see merchandise everywhere and rugby league has a presence.

Never did I think Melbourne would ever have a team such was the sporting bigotry down here.

Not helped by Ch9 burying it to midnight replays, if the gold wasnt on, in Melbourne and Perth until recent years!
