Strange that Crichton, Luai and To'o are good at club level but average or rubbish at Origin/International level. Then you have the likes of Munster and Cameron Smith who can play consistently at any level
Luai and too we’re pretty decent for nsw

and that’s under the coaching of brad plodler

How am I nitpicking?

I’m just suggesting that SOO ratings are incredible and that Australians watch things that Australians are involved in. To suggest that ratings for two island countries would reach those numbers I think is incredibly optimistic or borderline fanciful.

As I said though I wouldn’t care about the ratings because I think its value would be in other ways and in my opinion, it’s value to the future of the game is much more than SOO.

compare that to to snoozefest that is our anthem before origin

Saying that any international not involving Australia can score massive ratings in Australia is a stretch. But if Australia, New Zealand and England match-ups start becoming closer games and NZ and England win more tournaments, they're capable of drawing 1.3-2.0 million.

Kangaroos vs Kiwis is potentially way more valuable than the Bledisloe, when you consider that the Wallabies haven't won it in 20 years. Since 2010 Wallabies have won 6 times with 3 draws out of 37 games (16% win, 8% draw rate). By comparison the Kiwis have won 5 out of 21 match-ups in league (24% win rate). The biggest thing holding it back is that lack of scheduled games and New Zealand's overall competitiveness. If New Zealand start winning 30-40% of matches then it becomes a lot more valuable. Same with England vs Australia.

True but having forked out around $400mill a year for afl for seven years how much have they left in the kitty? how would their business model afford say $750-800million a year expense for two sports? That’d need a big increase in fees, or subscribers.

A few years ago, Rupert did say, " we've always preferred Aussie Rules". And the News Ltd CEO backed him up. My theory is, once the AFL has enough subscriptions in NSW and Qld, then Fox would ditch the NRL. IMO, that's where Fox is working towards.

For many years, Fox wanted every sport. But rights deals are becoming expensive. In recent times, Fox have let go of Super Rugby, EPL and the A League.

Currently, Fox to their chagrin, still needs the NRL for it's subscriptions in NSW and Qld. Also those same subscriptions could be partly funding the AFL deal.

The NRL needs to be fully aware or assume of Fox's long term intentions, otherwise the competition may become second rate.

I think it’s intentional by news ltd to pay our main rival more to keep us their under thumb. A truly independent rugby league would be the number one sport in Australia by a long way

& here come the negativity from the AFL lover .
same shit …just like when we made a profit during Covid & PRFL ranted it was made due to cutting development costs & that afl didn’t cut costs that’s why they lost $$.
he went very quiet after i posted an article that showed the afl cut more in development than the NRL .
lol
youjust can’t see any positive in anything RL .
no matter what good news is released you have a negative spin on it .
strange how it’s the opposite with a negative afl story .
You spin a positive on it .
you’re afl love shines through again .

The nrls response to covid was to get on the front foot and the sport emerged in great shape

afl acted in a reactionary manner and now is not only losing money but saddled with debts taken out during covid

One year could of been an outlier but made a profit in 2018 and has been continuing that, despite having more costs. Yet the AFL lover only sees bad

There’s a twitter poll asking if Toovey should take over as head coach right away and 92 percent said yes

The lack of practice game
Into strange selections
Hammer is going to be fullback for Wayne, why not have him fullback especially with no lead up game to see Suailli in action.

Fact remains them v Tonga still will be a good ratings

And more since then

meanwhile the nrl clubs are getting record levels of funding whilst the arlc makes profits
Fantasy land, they didn’t use any of their credit line and dipped into their cash reserves to cover their losses same as nrl did.

making a surplus to have those cash reserves to invest to cover tough times is just good business and it’s good to see nrl pick it up again after Dave smiths future fund model was quashed by greedy clubs and they then spent the club bail out fund he set up.

a 5-10% annual surplus to build an asset base is good financial governance for a sport. I see the nrl clubs are bleating about it again!
hopefully we don’t compromise our grass roots funding to keep upping the club grant and getting this surplus though. Long term that’s very much a false economy for the game.

Except they did a tv deal that not only recovered all their covid media loss fox next year but then delivered a new contract that sees an increase of $250mill A YEAR. Yeh the future looks bleak for them financially lol.

And more since then

They borrowed an extra $18m in 2020, but the debt level now is still lower than 2019. And Id bet most of that is paid off in/by 2025.

AFL External Loans and Borrowngs
('000s)
20160
2017$ 185,114
2018$ 176,630
2019$ 95,759
2020$ 113,800
2021$ 90,497

The AFL doesnt exist to make profits - it exists to operate the league and support the game. And unlike the NRL it wasnt going bankrupt and isnt in dire need of profits to start buying assets. (according to Vlandys himself)

Yep you keep justifying poor financial management

this is what having blind faith in bad leaders does for your sport

maybe the next guy will do a better job than the last one even though the bar was set so low
