Yeah that's not quite the same. Newcastle has a team. Sunshine Coast doesn't have one. Although in time, that area could be well established under the Dolphins. Tbf, you are spot on about Souths trying to flog membership in Qld.
Could they not have team of their own ?

I don't understand the logic with Souths. They took their "home" game to the Sunshine Coast and their opponent was the Broncos. Souths "gifted" the Broncos home ground advantage. Most likely, Souths fans would be in the minority in the crowd.

Souths should've taken their home game at Commbank, which is not that far away from Accor. Or if they want to promote the code, perhaps take it to Perth at Optus Stadium.

At the end of the day, clubs should treat the NRL as a competition, not a charity. Last night's game was a charity.
I’m guessing souths were paid to take the game to the Sunshine Coast?

Yeap, the NRL & Sunshine Coast have a contract in place to bring games to the venue.

Deal was for 4 matches this year (2x Trials, 2x Premiership), with the Broncos taking the trial games and Dolphins & Souths the Premiership matches.

Not sure of the exact figure the club gets these days, but it's more than they get for a non-blockbuster at Accor plus they are able to sell memberships, etc on top of the appearance fee.

Construction may impact matches next year, but expect between 2025 - 2032 for there to be 4+ matches at the venue each year as they build for the Olympics.

Ideal scenario would be that the temporary seating becomes permanent and the Dolphins 'Kayo matches' move to the venue.

Simples. $$$’s Sunshine Coast council paid for them to take a game there.

I don't think 30k will happen at the Gabba this Thursday night - we need a complete sell out to get that given the Gabba's reduced capacity. Maybe 25-28k.

Pink line - pretty much sold, only restricted view and a few blocks of 2-3 seats available.
Yellow line - half sold, only the back 10 or sow rows of these sections are available.

Souths could’ve taken their games to the SCG given they’re so desperate to get back to Moore Park

Of course. But did they had to play against a Qld based side like Brisbane? If for example, Souths played against Canberra on the Sunshine Coast, then it becomes 'more' of a neutral game.
What the f**k are you even talking about? Souths choose to play a game there, they also choose to play the Bronco's there.

The Gabba crowd will be interesting as it'll go head to head with a Matildas World Cup game across town

Also, over 44000 tuned up to the England game vs Haiti (who?) yesterday at Suncorp Stadium.

There was also over 41 000 in Auckland for the USA vs Vietnam game. Both games with teams from neither of the host nations.
Anyone calling the 2023 WWC a mickey mouse tournament is kidding themselves.

If Ch9 was really the home of Rugby League they should have done a story on the Newtown event. Great promotion and a feel good story..

Indeed.
I went yesterday and it was an amazing day for local RL.
I have loads of photos and will download once I get my new computer to talk to my f**king phone.
I've no doubt that there was nearer 20 000 there and I'm not doing this GWS bullshit counting. My pics will prove it.
In fact, the crowd would have been bigger than any crowd that GWS have had for years, even despite their fudging.
And there was still loads of room for so many more. People forget how big Henson Park is. I have pics that easily prove another 5-8000 people could have been easily accommodated, and that is being conservative. The western grandstand side was sparsely populated with still loads of standing and even sitting room. It's probably the biggest old school suburban ground in Sydney.
The reason the gates would have been closed was that they didn't have the infrastructure in place - for example, enough Port-a-loos. The queues for a piss were horrendous.
Anyway, it was a cracking day. Cold and sometimes cloudy, yet dry.
Took me way back to matches I attended in the 70's.
Fox League could also have done a fun day segment on yesterday.
