The Game 2023 Crowd Watch

The McIntyre System was in trouble the moment St George choked in 2009 and got knocked out in week 2 in 2009.

Being Minor Premiers and losing one game meant they got put on Brisbane & then Melbourne side of the draw for away games. They were screwed the moment Parra beat them in the final.

in saying that looking at the ladder in 2009 and the finals results we probably get the same result in 2009 anyway with the current system now a Melbourne v Parra GF just the opponents in week 1 changed.

Week 1 would have looked like this
1 v 4 - Dragons v Storm - Storm win
2 v 3 - Bulldogs v Titans - Bulldogs win
5 v 8 - Manly v Parra - Parra Win
6 v 7 - Broncos v Knights - Broncos win

Week 2
Dragons v Eels - Eels beat Dragons in week 1 2009
Titans v Broncos - Broncos beat Titans in week 1 2009

Week 3 - was the same prelim pairing as Mcintyre system in 2009.
Storm v Broncos
Bulldogs v Eels

Someone mentioned Cowboys getting smashed week 1 and making the GF.

2009 - Parra 8th
2010 - Roosters 6th
2011 - Warriors 11th

All made the GF.

2004- We came 4th. Home final and got the week off. Which in turn sent the 5th place Dragons home.

It rewarded the lower placed teams too much
Roosters and Parra at least won all their finals game son the way to the GF

But yes the current system is much fairer, it groups teams in to 4 teirs based on finishing position. The only tweak I would try and look at is rewarding the MPs in some way so finishing first has some value. At the moment there is no tangible difference to finishing 2nd.

Where would Cronulla host a week 2 home final against us?
Allianz thats what the hilarious part of this whole argument is.

If Cronulla finished 3rd they would not be able to play at Shark Park in week 2 as they would be slated for away game in week 1.

But because they finished 6th they get a home final in week 1 which allows them to host.

They are almost more beneficial finishing 5th or 6th then 4th or 3rd purely based on getting a home final in week 1.

Not sure what the argument is with the new system. Its fine and wont change. The argument that 2 teams in the bottom 4 of the top 8 getting a home game and 3rd and 4th not is eh. 3rd and 4th get both a second chance and a guaranteed home final at some stage win or lose. And if i was a sharks fan id much rather a second chance and play away week 1 then getting a week 1 home final without a second chance and play infront of a park footy crowd of 11000.

Except if you're 5 or 6 and you lose you're out. 3 and 4 get a second chance and a home final.

does that only apply to a few Sydney teams
Assume Roosters, Souths, Dogs, Parra would get to use their regular home ground as would all teams outside Sydney (assume Dolphins would use Suncorp and Titans can play at Gold Coast)

I just think a team that finishes 5th or 6th should never get a second bite of the cherry, which happened pretty much every year under the mcintyre system.

The other thing was loser had to sit around and stew for the final 2 games to find out if they were going to survive or not.

Though I did enjoy not only beating the Dragons in 2009 at kogarah but knocking Manly out at the same time who had to sit around for 48 hours waiting for there fate haha.

At least now everyone knows where they stand whatever happens at fulltime. Which is a lot of better.

It’s a terrible day for the game when all finals sell out in week one? It’s a new whinge but not unexpected mate.

If all finals go to the higher ranked team.

We will play Storm in a Prelim final Friday night in 2 weeks at Accor,

Lucky to draw 30k... if everyone who whinged got tickets it will sell out
