Couple of years ago I saw an interview with a Tweed Seagulls women's player. Said she'd grown up on the GC and Dad was an AFL fan from Victoria. The family only got into RL when she started playing. It is an area of recent arrivals mainly from other states who would bring their previous affiliations with them
However, there are probably enough born and bred Gold Coasters now to support a team their long term and it appears to be reflected in the crowd figures for the Titans this year and last which are higher than previous years despite the team being no more successful
RL has only recently targeted the female half of the population in participation strategies. We let other games and pastimes steal a march over us for decades. Colossal mistake. Mothers influence the choices of present and future generations regarding junior sport.
There doesn't appear to be any League Tag comps run through RL clubs in QLD. Gold Coast should aim to have as many girls League Tag participants as the Cronulla junior league.
