Grr that Melbourne crowd should be at least 40000.
In all seriousness they should look at taking 1 blockbuster per season to dock lands and boost dat average. I think it would be cool for the wahs to do the same at Eden
Maybe the three rectangular codes should lobby for a fit for purpose 50000 stadium in Melbourne for the A League Clubs, Storm, Rebels and associated internationals and rep matches? Or should we play our big matches at a ground owned by our major opponent so they can reap financial bonanzas from our gala events?

pretty sure they wanted to do that but apart of the agreement was not make it over 30k

That’s the point. It’s all the fumblers way. There is no rational explanation as to why such a facility can’t be built other than the bullying antics of the fumblers. But you can’t stop the world and eventually common sense will prevail. It’s a matter of it happening sooner rather than later.

It will probably never happen, short of a FIFA mens World Cup. The Victorian Government is pretty happy with the three stadium strategy it has now - especially since the Marvel funding agreement forces the AFL to allow the Government to use it for major sporting events for the next 30 years.

Its a simple strategy

Aami Park holds anything rectangular up to 30k
Docklands can hold anything up to 56k
MCG can handle anything over that.

Between them the three venues are some of the most used and best attended in the country. No White elephants there, and of them only Aami Park is really taxpayer funded - the Marvel funding bought 20 years of Grand Final hosting as well.

For this you can nlame the Victorian Government. The only reason Docklands exists is because the Government wanted to protect the MCG, the only reason Docklands doesnt have greater capacity is for the same reason, and so Aami Park had to also have capacity restrictions to protect both Docklands and the MCG.

It was built with foundations to allow for expansion to 50k in the future...until they put that bubble roof on. It would be quite expensive to upgrade, and its nearing 20 years of age in 2026....so maybe a capacity upgrade when it inevitably needs expanding aroundf 2030

I really wish the NRL would look to have Saturday and Sunday's for week 2 and 3 during the finals like the old days.

I get it's a balancing act with the tv networks but how good would have last nights game been if it was played sunday at 4pm in Melbourne with nothing else on in the city.

When the next tv deal rolls around, there will be 18 teams, nine games a week. Maybe have four of them on FTA, and therefore, it may allow a return to Saturday night and Sunday afternoon for weeks 2 and 3.

It feels weird not having a game on a Sunday.

That would be great if the afl allowed it ha ha. If australia ever got a fifa World Cup you’d get one in Melbourne

Pretty confident it would have been 25k+ if it was Sunday afternoon or even this afternoon. The thought of trying to get to & from the same area with 120k others on a Friday night would have put quite a few off, not to mention the pricing and Carlton & Melbourne fans all sitting it out.

I’m a neutral with zero interest in AFL but I would have gone if it was played at pretty much any other day/time this weekend.

Nope, just GA north zone from the ticketmaster map. The south stand which is usually GA is assigned though

The south stand is fairly big so that will have netted a few hundred extra total capacity, so probably nudge it over the 25K mark.

the club doesn’t like putting extra seating in the north end as it displaced the fan zone area.
