The Game 2023 Crowd Watch

The south stand is fairly big so that will have netted a few hundred extra total capacity, so probably nudge it over the 25K mark.

the club doesn’t like putting extra seating in the north end as it displaced the fan zone area.

Which is just stupid. There's plenty of other places there to have a fan zone.
Although, it's the NRL who get all the money from these semi's, so there's no incentive for the Warriors to do it unless the NRL pays for it.
Also, I don't know why they don't sell more tickets for that hill. There's shit loads of space.

I don't get why the club would want a "carney zone" taking up prime real estate that could be better utilised with stands with 3-4k paying punters.

Fans like it. Creates atmosphere?
Pretty much. It’s popular with the regulars.

I’d love to see the south stand placed with a permanent wrap around stand with a concourse behind and above it where the fan zone could be moved to with the temporary stand moved to the north end- that’d satisfy all requirements and push the pet ant capacity over 30k.

Exactly my point.
When the Warriors first joined the comp in 1995, they had much larger crowds than they have now.
They didn't have a fan zone at the north end and that north hill was always chock full.
It could have had so many more fans there today, yet for some reason the NRL decide to sell about 10% of its capacity.
Anyway, highest 1995 crowds in the Warriors first season. The Brisbane game was their first ever game in the NRL.

Mt smart is due an upgrade but I’m sure I read that the Auckland council is not currently flush with cash or even in the red?

Yes it was but you know what I mean.
A completely enclosed stadium is so much better.
Who knows mate.

maybe it isn’t cost effective to build the temp stands or maybe it’s a time issue?

either way it’s safe to say that the warriors have outgrown their current 25k capacity.

an extra 5k-6k seats would be a perfect increase for the big games and wouldn’t look to bad when crowds are around the 14k-15k mark as well.

Mt Smart is unlikely to ever be permanently fully enclosed- that north end is used for concert and festival stages and makes it a more flexible ground. Still plenty of improvements that could be made to it though.

Yeah the council isn’t flush and has a lot of repair bills after the major storms that hit Auckland last summer? Plus the mayor was elected on a platform of reduced spending so they’re unlikely to splash out on bog projects.

Concerts are held in enclosed stadiums all over the world. That is no reason to keep the north end of Mt Smart a shitty looking hill where they sell a few hundred tickets just to keep a fan zone open.
Did you not see my earlier post and the awesome crowds that the Auckland Warriors got in their first season?
For the record, I'm am not advocating to retain that hill. I'd like that northern end enclosed with a wrap around stand from the eastern side. But what I'm saying is that while that hill is available, it should be used.

On Auckland's stadium situation, in my opinion, they are better off building a new stadium to replace Eden Park and Mount Smart close to the CBD that's similar to Suncorp but slightly larger. That would allow Eden Park to be reconfigured into a boutique cricket ground and Mount Smart to be converted into a raceway or even a boutique 2nd tier League/Union ground (although North Harbor Stadium already exists for the latter) and that will fix the stadium issues Auckland has right now
