Like I'm obviously never going to be an Origin coach but I think the perfect style for Origin is the Panthers defence and Parramatta's power game. And you can do that in Origin because unlike club teams with a salary cap, you don't have to pick standard NRL players to balance that.

So you can have a front row rotation of RCG, Haas, Paulo and I dunno someone like Leniu or someone like Murray or Matterson who can play middle or edge. They're no slouches in defence either but hey, no salary cap, so you have have Yeo and Murray/Trbojevic to do the tackling anyway.

Freddy almost picks an Origin team like he has a salary cap. "Shit I've spent my dollars, better pick up some bargains. How about Beat and Utoikamanu?"
It's not just Freddy to be fair, we have always had a few weird selections for one reason or another. Makes me wonder if it's a directive from higher up in certain cases. The Knights for example are usually represented no matter how busted they are at NRL level. In the late 90's early 00's it was warranted, but since that era there have been some head scratchers, Matautai or whatever his name was, like how the f**k did that happen and why? The only logical reason is to get more Knights fans invested in the game, not a bad idea from a purely business sense, but not that conducive to winning games. Not just Knights either, that was just an easy example given the Best selection.

The NSW media have a lot to answer for as well, they bleat long and hard in the months leading in calling for selections based on f**k all, then tear the same selections apart once they happen. We need a Bennett style coach that is comfortable telling the talking heads to f**k off with their stupid ideas and then get on with picking and preparing a team to win a game of footy with 0 care factor to picking media darlings.

That is Freddy picks Penrith guys rightly so, Then does things like in Game 1.

Picks the whole Penrith right side but plays them on the left.

Or picks lazy defenders when the Penrith game is built on Effort areas.

He went Souths heavy this game but won't adjust the playing style to match.

He picks Best - clearly looking to the future
Yet goes with a 33 year old in the 6

I have said before I listen to podcasts over actual RL media.

Willie Mason nailed it best, They keep overlooking guys with years of good performances for guys coming off a good game or 2

Gotta say, that Levels podcasts with Willie and Justin Horo is honestly the best one going around IMO. They both speak very well when they're being serious.

That's kinda funny coming from Willie, he got on the radar for having a stupid hair do which is the kind of shit we keep doing. To be fair, he was up to it at his peak and served NSW & Australia well.

Pretty much on the money with what he said too. Drinkwater 18th man is another example of it.

Did Brad Fittler really say about not picking Matt Burton: "They are not going that good at the moment the Dogs, so he is probably better playing at the Dogs"???

That's a frighteningly outrageous comment to make.

In his defence. He did come into a successful side, I'd have no issue with fast tracking Pensini or someone.

It is just these project players from struggling teams don't work.

Look at when NSW won in 2021.

All players from sides going well. Found a way to start Yeo and Murray also

Yep. After picking Best on the back of hammering them.

A week earlier Tago tore best apart
I'm more from the integrity angle. Does he want to help the Bulldogs out? How about helping the Eels out, who are the only club not to receive a bye before any origin this year?

Frankly it's outrageous.

He is mates with Gus though.

Which is typical RL to be so political like that. Pick the best 17 available and be done with it

The sooner origin moves to a mid-season, 3 consecutive weekend block, the better.

Pick a squad of 22 and stick with them for the series.

I'll enjoy the Pacific Island tests and the other stuff that can happen in those weekends more.

You would use more than 22 having them back up, Also most players would choose the islands. So the quality drops

I agree. Which is one of the reason why I think they dropped the mid test games.
Some of them would probably pick origin over the islands but they definitely don't want to take that risk, especially if it's Samoa vs Tonga in a packed out stadium and the players will definitely have second thoughts about origin

Wonder why they didn’t apply that logic to Ado Carr as well ?

Good

The sooner we get back to Internationals being the dominant representative fixtures, the better

I agree but you need ESL to stop as well or we are weakening Origin and not having full strength test teams.

That is why end of the year is best for tests

Tonga's coach prior to this year was coaching in England.

a small number of players too.

So end of the year gives stronger tests, both comps stopping for a month is the only way if want mid year tests.

Samoa
Tonga
NZ
England

in a comp would be a high standard to keep interest in between Origins.
