Go on then

take average audience for each multiply it by total hours and let’s compare

afl goes for longer and has less people watching those longer games

Ive literally multiplied the average audience by match length. Where did you think total hours watched came from?

to get the total hours watched = average audience x average match length.

Multiplying total hours watched x average audience doesnt give you a figure of anything even close to relevance.

If we stll had audience split data coming in Id bet that the AFL and NRL audiences would be very close in the first half of an AFL match, with AFL audiences drifting off after half time - like people leaving a match early. This brings the AFL average down. Ill see if I can find some older data somewhere - i think I have it from as late as 2021.

i have just done the numbers based off foxtel program times . Has NRL at 115 minutes from start to finish and AFL at 155 minutes from start to finish. Multiply by your average viewers x 153 games and divide by 60 I have NRL at 205 mil hours and AFL at 220 mil hours . I have never watched afl so didn’t know how long it goes for but seem as if only 35% longer not 50% going off above?

And why the f**k does afl go for so long? Don't they have 4 20 min quarters?
No wonder I have never been able to watch a full match, do they stop the clock everytime someone drops the ball or what?

As a rule i go Ive always gone whistle to whistle - I havent ever done it to broadcast times, but its probably more correct to do so for ratings purposes, and I may rethink that.

An Average NRL game will run for about 90 minutes with 2 40 minute halves and a 10 minute half time.
An average AFL game will run for about 150 minutes with 25-30 minute quarters (offical time is 20 minutes + time on eg the game time stops for injury and out of bounds, kicking at goal and retrieiving the ball after a goal etc) + just over 30 minutes in 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 time breaks.

Official game time is 20 minutes a quarter + "time on" - the whistle stops for injurys, goal kicking, retrieving the ball from the crowd, resetting after a goal, out of bounds etc. Your average quarter will go for 25-30 minutes.

A quarter time and 3/4 time break is about 6 minutes, and half time is 20.

Sounds like the NFL that goes for 3 hours, with the amount of stoppages

The NFL would go for half the damn time it does if they didnt have separate offensive and defensive teams. So would rugby league if you changed entire teams every time the ball swapped sides. See thats what Vlandys is missing.

Why does in the NFL they stop every freaking time after a tackle? They do a tackle and celebrate like they've just scored a touch down lol.
I think they stop for 40 seconds after each tackle is this correct?

Surely for ratings purposes and viewers you have to go broadcast times as I’m sure you aren’t including the spike in viewers on the Matty John’s show when the nrl game goes to golden point and it rates 300k

Don’t get me wrong , I appreciate the time and effort that goes into what you do , and I understand you are an AFL fan first, but the way you calculate that is definitely favouring AFL

And free to air has AFL in 180 minute blocks and NRL in 140 minute blocks , works out to be just under 30% longer for AFL
For so long on this forum we have just swallowed this "total viewing hours" stuff without question. Yours is one of the most original out-of-the-box pieces of thinking I have seen on this and probably correct. Well done.

Thanks, TBH I haven’t taken notice of how long an AFL game went for but new it was 20 min quarters so didn’t add up that it was 50% longer and had a quick look at tv schedules on FTA and fox

Sure - its just never occurred to me - and no one else has brought it up before - Ill make some adjustments going back to year start in the next round summary accordingly.

What isnt also calculated is prematch and post match for 7 is generally higher than it is for the NRL. Or that some Fox games are partly shown on BOTH 504 and 503 for the AFL. The ratings dont reflect that historically the PEAK of AFL ratings is higher than NRL matches. But the flip side is that things like Golden Point time is sometiimes not included in the general match rating. Its where audience splits would be handy to have.

Theres no real precise art in this, which is why Im stoked when the data i collect comes within 1 or 2% of the leagues announced totals at the end of the season.

20 min half time break seems excessive for a game played in quarters.
And as far time stoppages go, they are really only needed after a goal and serious injuries.
The less afl the better lol
