The thing I don't get is we bid to host the world cup. We won the bid. And now that the event is underway, most of it is hidden behind a pay wall. Like, what is exactly is the point of hosting the WWC anyway?

Just looked at attendances; France vs Jamaica at lang park got 49k. England vs Haiti got 40k at sfs. Germany vs Colombia got 40k too. Meanwhile, I barely know tournament is on.

If FIFA could choose between big crowds and NRL fans following their tournament, I reckon they'd take the former.

What percentage of NRL fans barely know NRLW is on?

Correct. FIFA don't care about soccer in Australia. It's a drop in ocean with our population of 26 million. They want to have full stadiums when games are shown around the world on TV (+ ticket sales).

It's a shame this big event in our backyard is hidden behind a paywall.

Matildas have survived. Fairly easily. Their round of 16 game is scheduled next Monday night. With Ashes finishing up tonight, there will be clear air for the NRL this weekend.

This week will be telling. Ratings on Fox League and Fox Fumble plummeted in the past couple of months. Even games with no direct competition from Cricket, Soccer, RU have underperformed. This in the context of inordinately high NRL figures earlier in the season. Hard to make sense of it all.

Members with an allergy to any mention of AFL (which BTW miraculously clears up when they start typing) should keep in mind that without a benchmark, Origin disruption could be idly invoked as the primary cause of straying NRL viewers. Whereas the detail that AFL ratings have probably fallen further than NRL ratings in June/July indicates that other factors are responsible.

Origin does f**k up the season. It should be standalone.

Ratings for both codes have tumbled during the Ashes period. They’ll now recover.

Can't see how they don't win it.
Tend to agree, it’s quite basic, but their fitness, speed and basic skill levels are just streets ahead at the moment. Their pack is so quick and fit, their line speed and defensive intensity gasses teams in the middle.
The Broncos pack can go with them from a speed/fitness, but the Broncos aren’t as consistent in the other areas of their game/team.
I fear it will take a severe injury/suspension crisis to derail the panthers.
They probably need to lose a couple of their main middles (eg Yeo and JFH) and either halfback to come somewhat back to the pack.

yep, but sought their attack properly (which I think they will) and it's over.

I think it already is - the only real chance is once it’s a knockout game, if the opposition play a blinder, and Panthers have a rare odd day, or lose players to injury or discipline. But all things being equal, all teams at full strength and full ability, they wipe the floor with the lot.

Cleary being injured is the best hope for anyone else

upsets are always possible in rugby league but the broncos would buckle in a grand final against Penrith like parra last year

storm vs panthers is an excellent preview this week

if Penrith belt them the comp is over

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a bit of thugby League from the Storm this week. The odd bit of foul play to injure a couple of blokes, Storm blokes might cop 2, 3 or 4 weeks, but would be back for finals - would be worth it to take out a Cleary, JFH, Chrichton, Edwards type player….
