Smith was a genius

cancelling Monday night football and giving nein a sat night game to kill fox exclusive super Saturday we’re brilliant

even better nein sold back that game to fox and got a huge reduction because they had to agree to stream games with fox

if only he was around now to mess it all up again
It only got messed up because he was stabbed in the back.

He'd backed Fox into a corner, News attacked him and the sport for it and the rest of the RL establishment panicked, got rid of him, and acquiesced to their demands.

Smith's mistake was that he didn't account for all the vested interests and boofhead ex-footballers, and expected them to be unified in the best interests of the sport when they're not and never have been.

I actually think his biggest mistake was not to include a clause which would have meant 9 could not sell a game on to Fox.
Smith was "outFoxed" by Gyngell.
I wonder how things would have turned out if 9 had kept that Saturday game, forcing Fox to go hard at the next deal.
Anyway, all what-ifs.

Smith’s biggest mistake was that he didn’t complete the tv deal. He only did half of it.

He backed himself into a corner and optus showed no interest in the pay tv rights for league

the game then had to accept Friday night at 6 pm and Murdoch saying they’ve always preferred afl

he gambled the games future and failed miserably

the deal he bragged about at nine ending up being pathetic

david gyngell played him as a sucker

The last bloke to do that got stabbed in the back by the rest of the ARLC and the clubs, then News did everything in their power undermine his legacy and whitewashed him from the history books.

Something tells me that PVL is to much of a self promoter to go the David Smith route.
Last “blokes”, smith stood up to news, got sacked, Greenberg stood up to ch9 got sacked. No wonder we never hear from Abdo lol

Smith landed a fta deAl worth $185mill, never came close before, hasn’t come close since.
Somehow that ended up at $125mill after he was sacked and fox still paid less than they did for afl. Great outcome for the game that one lol

That was for four games on nine and for all games being exclusive which never happened

Murdoch was so ticked off he gave your favourite sport an extra one hundred million pa out of spite

Again peddling that BS.

Ch9 sold back the Sat night game to Fox. So the NRL didn't see the $185m.

So he didn't land the deal at all because it wasn't complete

Which sport is your favourite, mate? Is it the one that last week you said this about -
some years I lose most interest in the nrl post origin until the semis
Since you also have little interest in NRL through the Origin period, I make that 12 rounds and finals where you have a real interest. Approximately half a season.
Waiting to see how ratings hold up for the next few weeks. Excitement around the game has been huge this year but as we approach the origin impacted rounds I already feel like all my interest in the NRL has just dissipated.
Waiting to see how ratings hold up for Origin. Latrell is out of the opener. The quality won't be the same without him.

I already feel my interest in Latrell-affected Origin has dissipated. Loss of interest in Origin 1 is already making me lose interest in Origin 2. Given that Origin 3 could be a dead rubber, my interest in that game has likewise already dissipated.

I'd suggest calling the whole thing off till next year, but I can already feel my interest in 2024 dissipating.

Probably wrong place but all those brontosauruses believing 10 and paramount are going to be players at the next tv right deal should get off the pipe.

A lot of ifs and buts in that News limited article. We could look at it another way that they become so desperate for content that they have no choice but to bid for NRL to stay relevant in Australia, even if it is to pump up the value to sell off 10 later. As long as Buffet is holding they will be fine.

There’s a reason they offered $600mill for afl. They desperately need nrl now, if nothing Else it will finally make fox and 9 pay up. Presuming vlandys isn’t leading negotiations again.

Do they have the $3b needed to get for the rights?

streaming hasn't been kind to them, They should of just kept providing content to other streamers.

For us here. Them going back to providing content to Stan is best. As both are dying a slow death

You left out one big detail.
Fox paid off Nine, not the NRL, for the extra Saturday game.
How much did Fox pay 9?
You‘d have to think that Gyngell made a nice little profit on that one Saturday game. Extra money the NRL could have had if Smith had been a little bit more wise in his decision to take 9’s offer Without a clause.

I think having the NRL rights in Aus could save them here, as they would probably bring in 2m + subs plus advertising for the FTA games/Origin and so called halo effect leading to more viewers on other shows. If the company fold due to USA market share then that will be a dagger for us and leave only 9/Stan as serious contenders.
