When Origin was emerging in the 1980’s, international football was still relevant, especially with Kangaroo tours after the GF.
If there weren’t any Kangaroo tours, then Origin might’ve been scheduled after the GF.
Origin has a strength and a weakness. It brings huge interest, but it is only one game between two states (teams).
International football also has weaknesses and strengths. Australia is dominate, with an occasional win from NZ as far as tournaments are concerned. But it has multiple games (countries)
Hypothetically if the Origin concept began in the last few years, you would have internationals during the season with stand alone weekends, and Origin after the GF.
Now the best you would hope for when team 18 comes in, is just have a round split across three weekends with 3 games each.
