Good crowds for expansion markets.
Lovely post. Expansion works but takes time and patience. The Storm are now making headway and have a genuine supporter base. I would add though the Suns and GWS were gifted big drawing Melbourne teams with strong travelling supporter bases to strengthen their crowds. They’ll fall through the floor again.

What a great crowd in Parramatta. 29,171 is a regular season record for any code at CommBank Stadium.

If you benchmark it against regular season games in Sydney in 2022, it would be the fourth highest crowd vs that year (behind only the Roosters vs Rabbitohs clash to open Allianz Stadium, ANZAC Day, and Good Friday).

If you benchmark it against regular season games in Sydney in 2023, it would be the sixth highest crowd vs that year (behind only ANZAC Day, Roosters vs Rabbitohs x2, Good Friday and King's Birthday).

With an appealing schedule + home games in 2024 (including a Sunday afternoon game vs Sea Eagles, Easter Monday vs Tigers, Saturday afternoon / evening games vs Roosters and Dragons, and a Friday night blockbuster vs Panthers), the Eels could achieve a record home attendance this year.

Not the greatest day in Brisbane - a few showers around and they continue to develop off the coast before heading inland. Hopefully we see 30k.

If only we could count 3 heads to each person like the way the afl does, than our crowd numbers will exceed 100k @ games

A really good opening round of crowds with only the gold coast slightly disappointing but still higher than recent history.
Would have been nice for the dolphins to crack 35k as well.

Only 6.5k down on my prediction of 190k for the round.

Very good start to the year. It's becoming clear that the growth last year wasn't just a once off. Last year we had 6 rounds (outside of magic, depending how you count it) that hit the 20k average. If we can go 8+ this year, we'll be looking good for another year of further growth.

For next week:
Thursday - Broncos vs Rabbitohs - 38k
Friday - Sharks vs Bulldogs - 12.5k (Sellout)
Friday - Panthers vs Eels - 22k (Sellout)
Saturday - Raiders vs Wests Tigers - 17K
Saturday - Cowboys vs Knights - 22k
Saturday - Storm vs Warriors - 23k
Sunday - Manly vs Roosters - 17k (Sellout)
Sunday - Dolphins vs Dragons - 10k (Sellout)

Total - 161.5k
Average - 20,188
-----------‐------------
Crazy thing about next week is how many games are likely to be capacity or facility limited. In a hypothetical world where the Dolphins played this one at Suncorp and Sharks, Panthers, Raiders and Manly had 25k decent quality stadiums, I think we'd be looking at:

Thursday - Broncos vs Rabbitohs - 38k
Friday - Sharks vs Bulldogs - 18k (only because of the timeslot)
Friday - Panthers vs Eels - 25k
Saturday - Raiders vs Wests Tigers - 21k
Saturday - Cowboys vs Knights - 22k
Saturday - Storm vs Warriors - 23k
Sunday - Manly vs Roosters - 25k
Sunday - Dolphins vs Dragons - 28k

Total - 200k
Average - 25,000

Still plenty of growth being held back by suboptimal facilities.

The Dragons have a great contingent of away fans in QLD, it’s such a waste that Dolphins vs Dragons is being played at Redcliffe on a Sunday.

Redcliffe should be saved for when the Dolphins play low drawing teams at bad time slots, eg the 6pm Friday game.

Sharks capacity for the start of the season is now 13,500, which I know isn't a huge increase, but for rounds like the next with so many small venues, we'll take every 1,000.

Storm v Warriors is already outselling Storm v Panthers, so hopefully means it can push into 25-26K territory.

Not sure if Raiders have a lot of seats on hold, but Grandstand has only limited availability at Canberra Stadium. Hopefully means they can push closer to 20K.

Like the Thursday night Round 10 game against Manly. I hope not, but I can't see that going over 15k. Dragons fans came out in force yesterday, back to the old days. Coming off that win, there'd be more next week.

Any more than 1-2 games at Redcliffe is excessive. They’re trying to build and solidify a large city-wide fan base in their formative NRL years, playing in Redcliffe does nothing to help that, especially in Round 2 on a Sunday against an opposition team who have decent support in Brisbane.

Agree. It's crazy that Dragons & Souths will play at Kayo Stadium, despite both having strong supporter bases in South-East Queensland, yet Manly and even the Knights, who have far less support in Brisbane will be at Suncorp.

NQ's win today might see a spike in sales this week for next saturdays game against Newy. Looking at Ticketmaster it looks like it would be 17k crowd as it currently stands, lots of seats available in the eastern top deck.
