Parramatta winger Jarryd Hayne has been fined $1000 by the NRL club over an incident at a hotel on Saturday night.

Hayne, who made his first grade debut three weeks ago, has apologised after a member of the public complained about his behaviour at The Roxy in Parramatta. The latest incident is the third to engulf the embattled club in recent weeks.

Last month Eels' players Mark Riddell and Tim Smith were fined $5,000 and dropped to Premier league for turning up drunk at a recovery session. And captain Nathan Cayless was recently reprimanded for damaging a security camera in a Star City casino lift.

Eels chief executive Denis Fitzgerald says the club would not tolerate misconduct.

Meanwhile, Bulldogs utility Reni Maitua has re-signed with the NRL club for a further three seasons. Maitua, who has played 47 first grade games since joining the Bulldogs in 2002, will remain with at the Belmore club until the end of the 2009 season.

The 23-year-old says he is pleased to re-sign with the club and end speculation about his future.

Elsewhere, South Sydney has ushered in a new era at the NRL club, with new owners Peter Holmes A Court and Russell Crowe officially taking charge today.

Holmes A Court, who handed over a $3 million cheque for a 75 per cent purchase of South Sydney at a ceremony at the Sydney Town Hall this afternoon, says his main task is instilling a winning culture again at the Rabbitohs.

Sounds like a warning there...? Mothers, lock up your sons ;-)

This incident seems a nothing thing, something that happens every weekend and usually gets settled after a complaint by the venue throwing someone out.

While Jarryd has to learn to be careful how he conducts himself in public as a first grader and at a pseudo-club sponsored event, if the Roxy had have just asked him to tone it down and leave (or maybe actually refuse drinks service to people who are intoxicated as per the law), then everybody would have been content.

The trouble being the venue chose to treat footballers differently to how they'd treat an ordinary punter, which does no-one any favours - it helps create a culture where footballers think they can behave differently to other people, it helps a girl making a complaint think worse of the venue, and it gives the media ammunition to run negative instead of positive stories.

Roxy should have taken action based on the girls complaint (even just getting security in and giving him a talking to and then close monitoring for the rest of the night) and then reported to the football club or advised the girl to do the same. Most people out there don't have a detailed understanding of the structures of clubs etc, and just know to report it to the logical place (venue) and if they aren't satisfied, then the media is there waiting and seen as an avenue that gets results.

Finally, some sense.

If every 18 yr old male (or those who have been 18) who made unwanted advances to females was fined $1000 in Australia alone we could pay off the National Debt inside a week.

If the Roxy bouncers had asked Jarryd to leave there would have been no mention of it....

You seem to forget that he is a public figure at the mercy of the media and has responsibilities not only to himself, but the club.

In saying that mate, I really think this is a nothing issue and if Hadley hadn't have got hold of it, it still would be.

He is also an 18 yr old kid who has just made first grade three weeks ago. A lot of people are expecting him to turn around and handle the responsibility that some seasoned first grade footballers struggle after many years within a matter of weeks. 18 yr old kids make mistakes - just because they play first grade doesn't mean they are going to be mature enough overnight.

In saying that mate, I really think this is a nothing issue and if Hadley hadn't have got hold of it, it still would be.

That is the second most sensible post of the whole saga.

And hence, he was fined. So, the club must have thought there were reasons to take 1000 bucks off him.

I reiterate my second statement.

It's a big step for an 18yo to get used to the attention and srcutiny that first grade brings. Perhaps there's a need for the club to think about some mentoring system (senior or perhaps volunteer ex-players?) for young guys that are likely to get the call-up. Kind of like a self-help package so they can start getting their head around the changes, instead of just fining people and calling meetings mainly to save the club's public face...

Yep, agreed. Maybe the club in organising/supporting/agreeing to these events could be a bit proactive with their venue partners about what they want to encourage in behaviour, to help the younger guys adjust to the change in scrutiny and maturity.

Earlier in the season, Jarrod was disciplined for being late or not appearing at training.

Three weeks in to his top grade debut, in the space of about five days he has:

1. Made outrageous statements about his team's chances to a reporter
2. Tried a flashy play to ground a ball with one hand that costs us the match in a game when our season was on the line
3. Got on the turps and embarrassed himself and the club

The guy's footballing talent is clearly immense.

But will people now understand some of the reasons why Brian Smith was reluctant to bring him into first grade too soon?

Do you think it might be possible that Brian held him back, not because he us a poor judge of talent, but because he perceived some dangers for a prodigiously talented youngster in an environment in which a team was struggling on a week to week basis and under enormous media scrutiny?

I'm not saying that he shouldn't be in firsts - he clearly belongs there. I am just saying that his biggest problem adjusting to first grade is going to be emotionally, and largely off the field.

We all must understand who he plays for as well.

The Parramatta Eels. The club that sells the most publicity outside of the bulldogs. Especially when Hadley's involved.

The great thing for Jarrod's sake is that this incident was so small and he can now learn from it early in his career.

Yes he is only 18, prehaps not mature in his thinking etc
But given his profile, he will always be in the media spotlight (rightly or wrongly)
Personally think that he is very lucky to get off as lightly as he did.

This is why kids should not be thrust into first grade so young. Its not just about the on field responsibility its now about the off field responsibilities. This is why Iam sure Smithy shielded so many.

That argument doesn't wash with me.

Besides the Hayne incident, all of our other indescretions this season have been by so-called senior players.

I'm interested to know what people think a FAIR punishment would have been? ... his punishment as I see it:
1) made to make a complete, personal apology to the girl
2) made to make a public confession/apology and admit to being dumb
3) $1000 fine ... now I don't know what salary he is on as an 18yr old coming up from flegg and PL, but I assume $1000 is a reasonable amount of it ... and compared to other footballers who get fined $5000 who are on several hundred thousand $ contracts

- would a week in PL make any difference? would it make the girl feel better? would it make jarryd feel worse?
- maybe a higher fine?

I agree but imagine being 18, suddenly pushed into the main frame. I couldnt. Theres more to being a FG player then turning up on game day.
