I genuinely think we don’t have any strong options to replace him. Carey will only come into the side if Paine is unavailable/retired.. so could you give a guy with little/no test experience the captaincy role?

You’d have to pick someone who you know is a genuine test certainty for selection. So taking Warner n Smith out, the only options would be bowlers or Labuschagne. Of the bowlers, Cummins is seen as the option by many. But I don’t think either him or Lab have captained first class cricket teams?? Could be wrong..
