We would've won the 2019 series but Captain Dick Pic only makes bad decisions while at the toss.
Yep it really annoys me technically we still haven't won a series in England since 2001. And that's going to be brought up next time we are over there.

Throw in the headingley test and some shocking DRS reviews.

We haven't missed a beat since paine departed he was past his use by date 2 summers ago

As a Pom I'mm not surprised by how awful England have been. The batting has been abysmal with shot selection (if I can call it that) being woeful. I've seen better at my local non league club. With the exception of Root they all play as if the Test matches are actually an ODI.

Sadly the chickens have come home to roost. The ECB only care about the money in limited overs white ball format. (T20, One Day Cup, The Hundred in 2021 season) How can they produce a Test Team when County Cricket (4 day) is only played in April and September. What a joke. Totally shambolic.

A part of me wishes Australia hammer us 5-0 in the hope that a massive reorganisation, management and running of the game comes to fruition. A complete overall is absolutely necessary.

English Cricket is on its knees.

Does the average Pommy fan value test cricket? Who gives a f**k about white ball nonsense

Certainly over there would be interesting atm with our fragile batting.

But NZ were here 2 years ago and shat the bed they didn't even come close.

They weren't as abysmal as England. But they were very ordinary.
NZ are the ICC World Test Champions though after defeating India by 9 Wickets at Lords

How often do the English Test players play County Cricket when not touring that is - also a few play IPL or other T-20 Tournaments which limits how much County Cricket they play. I think Lord Sir Botham was saying some don't even play County Cricket. Put in Cotton Wool.

If you don't play County Cricket or for that matter Sheffield Shield I don't know how you prepare yourself for Test Cricket especially when coming back to play from the IPL or other T-20 comps or short form Cricket.

Nowadays touring teams hardly play any warm up games or games between tests even pre-covid so if changes to the team are required your bringing in players with limited or no current red ball cricket under their belts.

No amount of net practice (batting and bowling) is a substitute for actual match practice.

You could argue we are the same domestically. Disrespecting the Sheffield Shield, its in 2 sections now. The BBL is front and center stage of our summer. Though we have a very condensed one day comp which no one cares about

Yeah but we are there bogey team in test cricket. The series they come out here 2 summers ago they were disappointing i was expecting a closer contest. I dont think for one moment Australia were in any trouble.

They do have a strong side and they deserved to win Test Championship.

This is the thing. Admin have basically treated the longer form of the game as an after thought instead of pinnacle.
Chasing the quick buck instead of long term. Shield season cut down for an all too long BBL comp.
BBL is like popcorn chicken (is that even still a thing) a solid snack, but is forgotten 5 minutes after it's complete and leaves wanting more.

I don't necessarily agree, although I do partly especially with the way they buggered the Shield.

The thing that we have which is a massive advantage is traditional Test matches. There will be an actual uprising if the Boxing Day or New Year's tests get f**ked with. Adelaide pink ball is becoming a traditional Test as well.

We're really the only country that does that, so there will always be a well know market and place for Test cricket and there will always be a focus on it. So we will ebb and flow like any side, but I struggle to see us ending up like England have. They have no such thing. I mean, yeah, there's loads of tradition to a Test at Lord's...but it never happens on the same day every year. It's not traditional in the way the Boxing Day test is.

Hopefully when Covid is as over as it's going to get we can get the Australia 'A' tours going again and things like that. It's all got to help getting players back into that.

You're right about our test traditions. Test cricket is still drawing great crowds. BBL isn't pulling any where near as many as it was a few years ago. Viewing numbers would be fairly strong though as it's mostly played around dinner time for most people.

don't hold your breath
Certainly this genie isn't going back in the bottle, I know that. But the next step is learning to live with it. Perhaps what's happening in the NFL is what that looks like. With players being placed on Covid lists and unable to play that week. I guess NFL teams can just call up players to plug in for that game and hope for best.

If that's what it looks like, it's going to make it tough on touring cricket teams though. Not as easy to just call someone up.

It's an annoying issue but not a hard one to solve. We might win up with 19 or even 21 man touring squads for a while?

Split into your First X1 plus reserved bat and bowler, and then 6-8 spares including a keeper?

Kind of like the old days...
