Going back to Haddin would be such a backwards move. He turns 38 in a few weeks time and has been awful with the bat and gloves. A tough (but logical) decision needs to be made by the selectors and run with Nevill from here on in. Not everyone gets a farewell series

Bell was averaging close to 50,

Peak average of 49.28 after hitting his highest score of 235 against India in August 2011.

Average now 43.18 after yesterday. That's 6 runs shaved off his average in the space of less than 4 years.

Similar decline to Gilchrist. Gilchrist averaged 55.65 before the 2005 Ashes series, and that series -with both bat and gloves - was the beginning of a sharp decline (should have retired after 2007WC win. Unfortunately, will be also remembered as one of those players like Hayden and Ponting who stayed on one year too long), finishing with 47.61, 8 less runs off his average in the last 2 1/2yrs of his career

players have worked him out though.
What do you mean?:?

Nev was very impressive and while Hads has been a great servant for Australia there has been a noticeale decline in his batting, based on the two test keeper performances i would prefer Nev as our #1 for the next test .

We were heaps better with Nevill behind the stumps and the batting lineup is much more solid with him at 7. Picking Haddin again at number 7 is a stupid idea. Reasonable career, and terrible circumstances around him actually missing the last test, but professional sport is about performance and Haddins have been terrible for 18 months.

I wish he would just notice the writing on the wall and retire. We are better with Nevill in the side.

This is a must win game and we have to pick an inform side, and sadly that doesn't include Hads.

No point going back now, same with Watson his time is done as well.

Bairstow is a different animal to the one who we saw out here two years ago.

Robson has been shown to be a total myth. To think we were begging him to come back at one stage!

The step up from first class cricket to test cricket is frankly gigantic. The guy is batting at 5 for Yorkshire and he did struggle against pace in Australia.

Selecting him as a batsman and playing him at 3 is putting him under insane pressure.

England should bite the bullet and bring Pieterson back in the team.
Pieterson and Bairstow in, Bell and Ballance out. If they want a chance of winning the series.

I heard Boof talking about Neville last night, said he really impressed and Hads will play the tour game and he will decide from there.

He said the same thing about Watson and MMarsh having a "bat off" in the second tour game and MMarsh made a ton but he picked Watson.

Go figure.

Balance's footwork is terrible, or should I say non existent. Dont know how he ever made it to that level with such a bad technique.

They will pick Haddin for the 3rd test, you will see him deliver with gloves and bat

Neville will play 50 tests

Gary Ballance has been dropped for the third Investec Test against Australia with Jonny Bairstow earning a recall in his place. Ian Bell, who is also under pressure after a lean run, will move up to No. 3 at Edgbaston with Joe Root batting at four followed by Bairstow.

The remainder of the squad is unchanged with Adil Rashid and Steven Finn retaining their spots in the 13-man party as England aim to respond to their 405-run mauling at Lord's.

Although Ballance made an important 61 in the first innings in Cardiff, forming a stand of 163 with Root which turned England's innings around from 43 for 3, he has had his technique picked apart by Australia's pace bowlers as had been the case in the previous series against New Zealand.

Only once in his last 10 Test innings has he reached 30 and, on five of those occasions, he had been bowled.

"Gary was naturally disappointed to miss out on this occasion, however we feel that he will benefit from some time in county cricket to rediscover his form," James Whitaker, the national selector, said. "He has already had plenty of success at international level and, as selectors, we are confident Gary will play a significant role for England in the future."

England squad for third Test

Alastair Cook (capt), Adam Lyth, Ian Bell, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler (wk), Moeen Ali, Stuart Broad, Mark Wood, James Anderson, Adil Rashid, Steven Finn

Bairstow, who played the last of his 14 Tests against Australia, in Sydney, has been in stellar form this season. His hundred against Worcestershire in the current round of Championship matches was his fifth of the season and overall he has made 906 runs in the Championship at 100.66. He also made a successful return to the England side for the deciding ODI against New Zealand, at Chester-le-Street, where he scored an unbeaten 83 off 60 balls to secure victory.

Ballance was not the only member of England's top order short of runs - they have been three down for 52 runs or fewer in nine of their last 14 innings. Adam Lyth, the opening batsman who made his debut against New Zealand, has failed three times in four innings in the Ashes - regularly giving catches to keeper and slip cordon - while Bell endured a poor outing at Lord's, making 1 and 11 to continue a run where he has passed 30 only once in his last 12 innings.

Both, though, have survived to take their spots in the third Test with Bell moving up to fill Ballance's spot at No. 3 where he has previously batted in 22 Tests - the last of which was against Australia in Sydney - with an average of 39.27.

"The break ahead of the third Test will give the squad time to reflect on the series so far and a chance to focus on playing the positive, confident cricket we saw in Cardiff," Whitaker said. "For the third Test Ian Bell will move up the order to bat at three followed by Joe Root with Jonny Bairstow coming in at five. Jonny has worked extremely hard at his game and his record for Yorkshire speaks for itself. He fully deserves this opportunity."

The Poms think that Ian Bell who is hopelessly out of form will be better served by bumping him up the order to bat behind Adam Lyth who is a walking wicket.

Good luck with all that.

...all the while knowing your career is on the line.

Bell has the ability but it'd be one hell of a turn around if he can perform strongly.
