Katich shouldn't have been dropped for two reasons, one because he is still our best opener and two because someone like Phil Hughes who is seen as the replacement hasn't shown he is ready. If he is good enough he is old enough, or young enough in this instance.

Marsh has been impressive overall and he could have been helped by Katich to be blooded until he retires and then Marsh and Hughes could create their own history.

Katich was dropped for no other reason than his age, Hussey has done enough to save his arse while Ponting hasn't scored a 100 in how many tests?? Honestly the pressure should be on him to score, same for Hughes.

It should have been Punter that was dropped not Katich I have no doubt about that.

By relinquishing the captaincy, Ponting should know that he HAS to start scoring runs, he has looked better but not by much. The captaincy was his excuse for poor form, if he doesn't show he can turn it around with his shoulders no longer burdened then it is time to look elsewhere I think.

Marsh looks like one of those guys that needed to play at the next level to really show what he can do.

But like Hussey, he has served his first class apprenticeship. Rushing players in before they're ready is a recipe for disaster. Which is why I say no to Warner.

I'd be willing to give Ponting a little bit of time at 4, but not too much time.

At this particular moment:

Katich
Watson
Marsh
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Haddin

Khawaja would be lingering on the fringes with Ponting edging closer to the end

No problems with your cattle..I'd tinker with the order..

I'm only throwing Warner into the mix as it is obvious we are going through massive changes..Names are being thrown around left, right & centre..

My line up would be

Kat
Marsh
Ricky
Huss
Clarke
Watson

But if they are insistant on changes for changes sake then who would you consider next off the rank before Warner..

I can't see anyone who has put their hand up & say "pick me"..

I see you've got Marsh in your line up (as have i)..You couldn't really argue he performed at a high level in 4 day games over an extended period, before he got his chance..In fact it could be argued he is most well known for his exploits in the IPL and the odd game here & there for the ODI side..

Bit like Pup in that way and one reason why Shield can't be the only barometer and why in rare instances ODIs can be used as a form guide. The Aussie team does it a bit too much but it is still a worthwhile gamble IMO

Might be the same for Ferguson. Although in Marsh defence he was averaging 50 in the last few seasons when playing for WA.

Ferguson was pretty unlucky with his injury, I have no doubt he would have worked his way into the test team by now without that injury

he was in some pretty red hot form when he got injured

One of the problems with the previous selection panel was chopping and changing all the time and putting in random players that weren't ready. Warner has only played 9 first class games. I'd rather see consistent form for another, say, 18 months before seriously considering him.

On the other hand guys like Khawaja have been very good for NSW for a few years now.

Still, I agree with most of your line-up as well. If Watson is going to bowl more than 6 is probably better for him. Don't know about Huss at 4 though ...

The ODI side is a good place to blood players but I wouldn't use it as too much of a barometer unless they do exceptionally well or exceptionally poorly.

True, he was 16 when he started. But his last 3 seasons he has averaged over 50. Bu talent was never his problem just his application and shot selection.

Ferguson held some innings together with some pretty crucial knocks. It shows he can fight when things don't go his way which is a test cricket attribute. His mental strength is strong. He just needs to show he can do it for long periods to be successful at test level. I think he will eventually make a good 6. Hopefully Watson can bring a little more application and eventually be perhaps a 4 when Hussey retires.
