1 out of 5 good innings in live tests is not a good return.By my count that's 500 for the series from Smith. An australian hasn't scored 500 runs in an overseas ashes since 97 (that was a 6 test series)
He's had a few failures but that's a successful series
That said there are things we can think of. Like for example protecting our best batsman by moving him to four in England. Ideally though we would have a safety valve in the middle order who could really dig in like Steve Waugh.
We might need to think outside the box a bit. A bowler like Johnson might be good in Australia but garbage in England where an honest stump to stump bowler will be handy in England but maybe garbage in Australia. Gotta consider that a one style fits all approach might not be the ideal without generational talent.
I'd be shocked if England use Ali as the primary spinner in the UAE for example.
