5th Ashes Test: England v Australia at The Oval on Aug 20-24, 2015

By my count that's 500 for the series from Smith. An australian hasn't scored 500 runs in an overseas ashes since 97 (that was a 6 test series)

He's had a few failures but that's a successful series
1 out of 5 good innings in live tests is not a good return.

Good mean average, but median would be a more accurate reflection of his series.

Yeah, agree re: Smith.

Excellent in two.
Mediocre in one.
Unsatisfactory in two.

He scored 500 runs that's all a batsman can be expected to do. The target is 100 runs a test match.

The fact that the middle order had a couple of 50s between them is how we lost the ashes.

Smith 508
Rogers 480
Warner 418
Voges 201
Starc 157
Nevill 143 (from one less test)
Johnson 141
Clarke 132
Mitch Marsh 48 (from three tests)

The top 3 are doing fine tbh. There will be failures in particular in England against a moving ball but that's when you need runs from the middle order.

I think Smith had a fine series, but was inconsistent.

It will come in time.

But batting against the moving ball in England in the top 3 for an Australian is always going to have a few failures here and there. I think unless the player is Bradman being exposed to the new ball is tough.

It's why England prefer their best player at 4.

I think him chucking away the starts at Cardiff is probably his worst crime this series. That's where we lost the ashes (not just Smith but everyone)

That said there are things we can think of. Like for example protecting our best batsman by moving him to four in England. Ideally though we would have a safety valve in the middle order who could really dig in like Steve Waugh.

We might need to think outside the box a bit. A bowler like Johnson might be good in Australia but garbage in England where an honest stump to stump bowler will be handy in England but maybe garbage in Australia. Gotta consider that a one style fits all approach might not be the ideal without generational talent.

I'd be shocked if England use Ali as the primary spinner in the UAE for example.

There was a leprechauns testicle in that.

Speculation is Moeen will replace Lyth as an opener and Rashid will come in.
