I think Clarke will save Smith for when the pitch is spinning a bit more...He really is still a part timer, and with Beer bowling nicely there's really no need to expose him yet. Hold him back, wait til the pitch starts to go, then let him loose.

I also just saw this interesting tidbit on Cricinfo:

Cook has now batted for longer than any other England batsman in any series - 2026 minutes. Fair effort that.

Prior and Strauss have both appealed grassed catches this series.

Not sure why anyone does it to be honest, as they are always obviously not catches.

obvious to who ?

the haters

what you should probably need to know is this is not isolated to one country as it happens everywhere

most times these go to the replay they get given not out even though they have been caught cleanly, the reason being these replay cameras are not at ground level so you cant see under the ball or the bottom of the ball, some cameras are actually 20 or 30 metres above ground level so all you can see is to top part of the ball

I really dont know why they waste their time looking at the replays as they nearly always give them not out,

it cannot possible be conclusive due to the location of the cameras

I wonder if any Englishman will ever get close to Wally Hammond? Interesting that the three Ashes series on the list were all in Australia.

Hammonds record was broken by Bradman in 1930. Neither of their totals have been surpassed since.

Bradman - 974 (5 tests, 7 inns) in 1930 v ENG
Hammond - 905 (5 tests, 9 inns) in 1928-29 v AUS

Mark Taylor went closest (he's third) scoring 839 v ENG in 1989 (in 11 innings)

Cook has become just the 31st player to score 700+ runs in a series. (He's now at equal 27 with G.Sobers who scored 709 in 8 innings (5 Tests) vs ENG in 1959-60)

The only other current players on the list:
G.Smith - 714 (9 inns, 5 Tests) in 2003 v ENG
J.Kallis - 712 (6 inns, 4 tests) in 2003-04 v WIN

I reckon ponting has been when he started his career

He was dropped on 0 alot and the catches werent that hard and had alot of luck in other decisions as well

He was pretty lucky to be given out LBW when it hit on the knee roll when he had jumped a foot and a half in the air on 95 on debut.

Bradman beating Hammond's record really upset Hammond aswell.

I haven't seen Hughes one from today yet, but Prior's one in the last test I think was dead obvious. Ball bounced a good 6 inches from his gloves. Seemed obviously grassed live.

There certainly are ones given not out due to inconclusive footage, however generally whenever they are reviewed you can usually see ball touching the ground.

It might be nice to position a few of those high speed cameras about the place though to assist with those referrals. They'd certainly make a clean or grassed catch abundantly clear.

Like the LBW on debut?

Edit: TT beat me to it.

I think it's blatantly obvious from the sheer number of players that either claim those catches or are unsure that it is very, very difficult for them to tell.

And I have no doubt that most players genuinely believe they have caught them.

I'll concede the Prior one, that did show up as a half volley.

Most guys are pretty honest, its a hollow win if you have to cheat imo.

Generally if my team go up, I tell them if it didn't carry (if they thought it was a catch) I've even called players back after the umpire has put his finger up.

Doesn't happen too often but it does happen.

There's a difference though Twiz.

When you play for the love of the game, you're always inclined to be fair

When the game is your job and source of income, you do whatever it takes to get a pay rise. Fairness takes a backseat a lot more often.

It's a sad indictment on the game, but that's the simple truth, and it happens in every sport.

Why can't Mitch start an over with a ball that's doesn't pitch on Square leg?

Why can't mitch bowl at least 2 deliveries the same in ever over?
