But from what I understand legislation is needed to allow the main channels to be HD ( as crazy as that sounds)



Whatever that case gyngell promised NRL in HD this year. So unless it's going to be just a few games or something it looks like he lied.

Nope,

Not full HD as 7mate broadcast at a maximum resolution of 1440x1080i

However it was still a hell of a lot better than the SD rubbish that Nine dishes up.

Im trying to figure out if they just generally suck at broadcasting or if they go out of their way to make it shitty for viewers.

Theyre happy to do this when they have something theyd rather show on the main channel (Cricket, Backyard Blitz, random 40's movie), but they cant seem to manage it when League views actually want it.

Only showing it on the HD channel would split viewers more tbqh.

Assuming they'll show the same next Friday as they are tonight, they'd miss out on showing Antiques Roadshow and an encore of Love Child into Sydney and Brisbane.

TV rates like shit on Fridays so they'd lose probably ~50k viewers between the two markets, furthermore those two shows, particularly Antiques Roadshow would skew really old so they'd make f**k all back from advertising. A percentage of that 50k would also return to Nine watching either Nine itself or Go.

The loss they'd make would be miniscule and would probably be worthwhile for goodwill and for honouring the promises they made.
